I need to reformat & I want to load windows 7 x64 OS on a separate disk for booting & working speed, as of now its loaded on 2TB disk which has 4 different size partition. I have other 2 disk for data storage (all 7200rpm)

I have kept a budget of approx 5 to 6K
My choices are either 60gbSSD

(500gb would also do but cant find them in black only blue caviar are available)

I have no experience with SSDs hence the hesitation in making a decision.

SSD advantage I have read in forums.
Quite faster in booting & read write operations
not much heat they run the system cooler
no moving platters hence less chance of failure


SSD disadvantage
very less storage
expensive

1tb 7200rpm drives advantage
faster speed for read write OS
gives much more storage along with OS partition
value for money in terms of speed & storage space

1tb 7200rpm drives disadvantage
generates good amount of heat (I already have 3 disk running)
failure chances are there more than ssd (WD RMA have mixed feedback)

Based on your experience what would you suggest is the best option?

The popularly recommended Crucial M4 64 GB version is OOS on OnlySSD. Prices elsewhere are insane!
Is the Samsung 830 comparably better than the Crucial?
 
I checked for samsung 64-120gb on flipkart & read one review which makes me think

While this SSD belongs to the much famed 840 Series from Samsung, you have to keep in mind that most of the rave reviews are for the 250GB model and rightly so. Unfortunately the performance of the 120GB model is nowhere near the 250GB model. One only needs to check out a few reviews online particularly for this model to verify what I am saying.

Sequential write speeds for this SSD max out at around 120-130MB/s which is comparable to first generations SSDs released years ago. Most modern SSDs can manage 3x or 4x that speed. Sequential read speeds are acceptable and almost approaching 500MB/s. Random read and write latency is also very disappointing for this drive.

Also keep in mind that this SSD uses TLC NAND and as such the drive only has an average life expectancy of around 3-4 years.

Having said all this, this will still be a big upgrade for anyone who is used to slow 5400rpm laptop drives and their pathetic response times. The low price also makes it a tempting purchase but that low price comes at the cost of too many sacrifices here. I would suggest people to go for the 250GB version of SSD 840 series or some other brand 120GB.

I cant go for 250gb as of now so want to spend on best choice of 64-120gb.

Should be on par. I think only the 128GB and higher versions will pull out a lead over the M4. The Plextor M5S is a good substitute for the Crucial M4. But I guess of the three, only the Samsung has official manufacturer warranty in India.

The 120GB 840 looks tempting for the price, and the lower lifespan TLC NAND shouldn't really be a concern for an average user, but [H] noticed odd latency spikes with the 120GB variant. The 830 would be more consistent in performance.

I am tempted towards samsung with just 1300/- difference I get double space. Just want to be sure that this is the best in that class.

I would suggest to get 120/1288GB SSD instead of 60/64GB SSD if you are planning to add non-basic apps and games to SSD. Samsung SSDs are known for their reliability. I myself have Kingston 64GB purchased around 1.5 years ago and it failed in 1st month only. However I m not installing games on SSD so its sufficing me keeping approx 15-17GB free.

64gb samsungs are nowhere available so I am planing to buy 120gb disk.
Since I am getting 120gb I will create a disk partition & use it as scratch disk for image editing programs like photoshop & lightroom. I did read somewhere that ssd don't make good scratch disk due to constant read write it reduces their life, is it true?

I m not pro on this but there is one fact which I know. SSDs have finite write limit beyond which they start to fail. Since scratch disk will involve lot or writes, it will shorten span of SSD.
Experts please correct me here if I m wrong.

What is the advantage of corsair GT over samsung 840? the prices are far more than samsung840 series & beyond my budget but I can look into it if there is any compelling advantage.

I could not find any model name corsair GT, the closest one is this one, I presume this is what you recommend......right?

Surprisingly samsung spec says NOT compatible with SATA 2 since I have old system with Asus P5B Dlx-wifi mobo in which I want to fit this I have to double check its compatibility, I presumed that hdd would be backward compatible but samsung doesn't mention that in spec.

This thread on another forum says that YES its backwards compatible but will work at sata 2 speeds only which is fine with me just want to be sure, Guys please confirm this.

That comparison is a laugh. Please don't take anything on such "comparison" sites seriously. Check reviews, or hit the original manufacturer's site for proper specs.
Eg: It says the Interface speed for the Samsung 840 is 3Gb/s. It also says the Force GT has max sequential writes of 500+ MB/s. These are just few of the mistakes noticeable from a quick glance.

I thought so as many other pages have loads of praises for samsung 840 this one had 3 negatives which concerned me hence I thought I better double check before I order.
Glad that members have cleared my doubts.
 
I don't remember exact differences between 840 and corsair gt but gt was definitely better. corsair have synchronous nand,better 4k read/write than 840.
