Let's be the faces of the change we wish to see and kick off a sustainability initiative here from TechEnclave. All of us studied about the "three 'R's of sustainability - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" in our study books. It's time to practically enact all that knowledge in real life. We Indians, from centuries, have been exceptional at all three aspects but changing times demand more. We can't just sit back and blame the government for everything. Did you know that your damaged and worn out shoes can be recycled? I didn't. My damaged shoes always ended up in the trash can! There are organisations in our own country that have been working tirelessly for decades to serve this specific purpose. I'll list down a few here.

1. Goonj -
Link : https://goonj.org/
What it is : Goonj is a Non-Profit Organisation headquartered in Delhi, India which undertakes disaster relief, humanitarian aid and community development in parts of 23 states across India.
What you can contribute : Used/New garments, bed-sheets, shoes, utensils, furniture OR Monetary aid.

2. Greensole -
Link : https://www.greensole.com/
What it is : Greensole is an organization that recycles discarded footwear and upcycles them into fashion-first footwear.
What you can contribute : You can send all your unusable/worn out shoes to here for recycling. You can donate your used shoes in person at the collection centres they have around the nation. Unfortunately they cover just four-five states in India. But.. Shoes can be couriered to this one centre: Greensole, C/O A460 Ram Fashion Exports, MIDC, Mahape, Navi Mumbai- 400710. Plus, you can purchase brand new shoes recycled from the old ones from this site. And there are cute accessories for yourself, your kids and the delicate females you are surrounded by. :)

E-Waste Disposal and Recycling -
You can help recycle your unusable electronics such as mobiles, tablets, laptops, PCs by sending them over to the the e-waste recycling organisations. If you have a motherboard for example, it should be recycled, not disposed. Whereas if it's just random electronics lying around, then it should be disposed properly. Please check the listed portals properly before sending your items.

5. GEM Recycling - https://gemrecycling.com/
6. Vital Waste - http://vitalwaste.com/

More recycling portals:

Please post additional sources in replies. I will add it in the OP as long as the edit option is available. Anybody who contributes to the recycling process in any way or manner, please post your replies in this thread briefing your contribution. This includes purchasing recycled materials. Every reply will get a like from me.

Also, don't hesitate to share your thoughts, opinions and the additional resources you have to help with sustainability. I'd like to request the mods to pin this thread for visibility.

In addition to all these websites, if someone feels like shipping could be time consuming. Just observe your surroundings, there are a lot of people who are in need of what you have and don't use.

When it comes down to apperals, i usually go to the same orphanage & old age i regularly visit. Recently i was at that orphanage & noticed a young girl playing wearing my school shoes i donated many months ago. I felt so happy seeing that & I will never forget that moment. Nothing can give me more satisfaction than this. So yeah, these 3R's will also make you feel content about yourself.

Tips to reduce waste in your day-to-day lives and play a role in sustainable development:

Most of us use mosquito repellent solutions at our homes There are so many state of the art combat solutions out there but have you ever thought of doing the following?

Once the sun sets, I don my full sleeve shirts with full length pants while putting on a pair of socks and thin hand gloves around my feet and hands respectively. I arm myself with these for around 4-5 hours max as there is the ever reliable mosquito net to defend me against the pestering little freaks once I hit the bed.

Not just winters, this defence mechanism, if employed appropriately, works flawlessly in summers too. There is loose cotton clothing that wouldn't feel hot at all. Traditional Indian apparel particularly the ones from Rajasthan serve this purpose exceedingly well. Needless to say, this also happens to be extremely cost effective while being eco-friendly simultaneously.

I simply hate the smoke and scent of any mosquito repellent solution, and I guess most people do. The smoke is definitely not good for our health. We can do ourselves a favour by adapting our clothing to the change in environment.

I am sure many of us will be more than happy to donate but stops because of shipping hassles, Please list websites (If available) who are willing to pickup or have a collection point in major cities that will be very helpful.
I've personally postponed several times a give away thread because of shipping hassle

I use this to buy broken gadgets to scavenge parts from, I've purchased several tablets and laptops so far. Packaging is acceptable, but minimal. Pricing is very good compared other second hand stores, both local and online. Back when ZestMoney was still in business, they also had three month no cost emi available.

They also purchase old/broken electronics and resell them to people like me, I haven't sold anything yet.

If you live in Bangalore and want to get rid on stuff in hours. I have used it to scrap old furniture, electronics, etc. They respond within 2-3 hours.

Besides, there are up-cycle communities on facebook.
