As the title suggests. I'm to build a pc for a friend and am at a genuine cross roads. I don't recall a single good 1440p card for 35k - 40k in recent memory... All the current cards seem like upsells for bigger better cards. I finally landed on two that seem good enough for the price but that's still me stretching my budget thin. What would you recommend?

Other card suggestions welcome (except arc cause I don't want to end up being permanent tech support )

Thanks in advance !

If u like the used cards way try getting 3080ti, u may find at or near about 40k....maybe sometimes 35k also in warranty cards.

That's awesome, hadn't even thought of that. the chances of getting a "like new" 3080 ti are slim but would definitely look into it. I still would give an edge to new cards but if worse comes to worst then definitely going used

IMO 7700XT would be an easy choice at 40k as 6750XT is under 35k but seems like 7700XT is priced poorly to increase sales of 7800XT. IMO your call if you want to get 7700XT. Assume 6750XT to be similar to 4060Ti in raster performance. RT performance of 7700XT is similar to 4060Ti.

Used 3080Ti is definitely a great choice as I well, but not everyone is open to buying used products, so I can understand if you hesitate.

Current prices:
6750XT - 34k (asrock)
7700XT - 42k (sapphire)
7800XT - 51k (asrock).

Insanely helpful and well thought out. Thank you! To me now the 7700 xt does make the most sense, especially for 1440p where it'll hold up just fine.

I'm not really oppose to buying used I just don't want the people I'm building for to be stressed out about finicky used parts.

To be honest, considering the software support better to get a used 3080/3080ti now and upgrade to 4000 series later this year when NVIDIA launches 5000 series aka Blackwell. I'm sure you can get 4070Ti around 50k later this year easily.
