I have been using my laptop as a download rig for years now. My previous laptop was used for full time office work and full time download/upload rig for 4 years. Heat/electrical fluctuation are ur main enemies. protect against them and you can quite safely use it for extended peroxides at one go.

Y50 does have a backlit keyboard! Its y40 that doesnt have backlight..

I looked into X1 carbon. It is awesome but the specs are kind of iffy. Small HDD, limited ram, 4200U proc. Have you checked the y50?

Network and battery drain. Idk, usually from 15% to shutdown is rather quick. I have also seen battery drain overnight from 40 odd to shutdown. Both the network and battery drain issues need fixing asap.
