Hi friends ,
I'm planning to buy this particular model Acer Swift 3 Ryzen 5 Quad Core - (8 GB/1 TB HDD/Windows 10 Home) SF315-41 Laptop. @ 39000/-
http://dl.flipkart.com/dl/acer-swif...z?pid=COMF2AJUVH9BQUJ7&cmpid=product.share.pp

My main usage is document realted work with Microsoft office, Netflix, YouTube, photo editing. I'm a heavy user of chrome, generally open 15, 16 tabs at a time.

Is this laptop fast enough for my need. Please advice.

I have this
biggest issue - RAM soldered , cant upgrade
Will only accept M.2 SATA SSD and NOT NVME M.2 SSD . With latest firmware i don't know .
For Upgrade opening back panel is pain but can be done . I have done it many times .
Slowed down even with SSD on chrome tabs more than 15.... so have shifted to Firefox
SSD can be upgraded without voiding warranty by service reps . Dont go there but complaint on toll free number .
Felt brightness is less in sunlight .
Was in first lot to purchase when it was launched

Shoot if any more questions

Thanks for your answer. I will get a HP i5 model with SSD slot.

I bought a Lenovo Ryzen 5 . It came with 4GB RAM+1 TB hard disk. Upgraded to an extra 8GB, plus 256 WD SSD. The SSD is quite fast for the OS, loading etc, and the 1TB works well as a data dump.
I don't see the laptop slowing down with 20 tabs or so, probably because of the 12GB RAM.

Yes, 15" 1080p screen. I don't think it's IPS, but that wasn't the purpose for the laptop. Serves as a fast carry-around machine for work. Somewhat good for gaming also.

For somewhat more, there's an Asus with a Ryzen 5 and 8GB.

The Lenovo cost me about 29K in the earlier sales from Flipkart and the price has risen by 4K now. You'll have to decide about the cost-benefit ratio. The Acer Swift has a backlit keyboard, IPS HD screen, Metal chassis and fingerprint scanner, if those are important to you. However, the RAM cannot be expanded.

I believe you can expand the RAM on the Asus also (I have definitely put in 12GB. 4 soldered and 8GB DDR4 extra on my own Lenovo+256 WD SSD). Battery life isn't too good - I get about 2 hours to 3 of working time, haven't definitely checked but I knew that when I purchased it.

I did a small test because you were talking about multiple tabs. I'm guessing you'll need to expand your RAM to use 15+ tabs for sure.

Test 1 : Only Chrome open, with 15 tabs, and 4 active Youtube tabs. Memory utilization 6.6 GB and CPU hovering around 8-15%. Jumps when you shift from tab to tab.

Test 2 : Multiple applications open : Chrome with all the above tabs, Blender, Microsoft store apps and games, Word, Excel and Powerpoint, Blender 3D, and another couple applications.
While the memory only seems to have jumped slightly, notice how the disk usage and CPU have risen.

SSD Benchmark - WD Green 240GB
This is MUCH faster than the stock 1TB hard disk and I'd recommend this for any laptop upgrade.

Lenovo OEM HDD speed

The OEM hard disk is nearly as fast as my desktop WD Blue 2TB hard disk, so not a bad performance - however an SSD is out of the world when launching apps and in terms of OS snappiness.

Also note, this Lenovo laptop comes with 802.11AC wifi, whereas I'm not sure of the Asus. An earlier Asus i3 I had didn't have AC wifi and copying things over wifi was painfully slow. This gives me a steady 20-40 mbps when copying or syncing data.

Which M.2 SSD slot ?
M.2 SATA or NVME ?

Thanks a lot AK3D for you time to test the system for me. You have me almost convinced for this model.
Just want to know, did you get the SSD installed by service centre or did you do it by yourself ?

No problem. It served as a good test of these capabilities for me as well. I can probably do some video editing and image editing easily with this laptop (somewhat faster than a comparable i5).

The SSD - I installed by myself. Be aware it's not an easy process. I had to purchase a SSD caddy from Amazon (9.5 form factor), disassemble it to get the SSD circuit (for the SSD> motherboard adapter that fits into the Lenovo), install the SSD, I had to cut/grind to get a proper fit (the original caddy in the laptop) and then install it. The reason for this was that the laptop's bottom is curved, while the angles of most of the caddies out there are straight or don't exactly match the contours of the laptop.
If that is OK with you, not a big deal, but if not, some manual work is required.

RAM upgrade was painless. Open the back, insert the new 8GB DDR4 and get 12 GB. I would suggest skipping SSD installation till you think you need that extra boost.

If need be, you could also look at the Acer Nitro, which has a robust build, a Radeon 560 with dedicated 4GB GFX, 8GB RAM and 1TB hard disk. (If you want to extend your budget by that much. It is very easy to upgrade this.
