Apple Inc. is now a US $1 Trillion company

^yep, those are the critics pointing out the problem. It's a simple math, you continue to make same mistake you will continue to have same results, it just a matter of time. What is not pointed out in that article is the assets that Apple has that Nokia didn't had. Hence Apple slide may not be as drastic unless Samsung or LG relases a breakthrough technology like bendable screens or transparent/translucent screens. It will be good to see just how long this thin and bezeless screens will continue to stay relevant.

Apple would just buy those screens like they did for OLED. Not like sammy & LG are going to refuse. The problem is Sammy expected much more screen sales for the X

You said apple don't do their own tech. They do a lot of R&D. Don't they design their own chips. The whole design cycle from hardware all the way to software is controlled by them. Whether it be PC or mobile

They are no HTC

Don't they design their own chips.
Jim Keller was working for apple when they came up with their a series chips. Jim Keller is the rockstar chip designer behind Intel's processors then he moved to AMD and worked on Zen architecture, then moved to Tesla and worked on their custom chip for the autopilot and now he is back with Intel again. So Yes, they do design their own chips. They licensed ARM architecture from ARM and then heavily modified it. This is the exact reason why Apple's chips kicks snapdragon's ass.

They do a lot of R&D
They do lot of assembly design and testing. Only a few core people are involved in breakthrough tech and they are supposed to maintain secret services type silence. That is no R&D. The R&D is able to give freedom to people, example is google where any new voted idea breaks out into a product and is given certain time to shine before plugging out if not successful. This is why you see lot of google apps coming and going, it may not be seen productive, but this is where a mind can develop new idea and surely when you try enough, one is sure to click

Most of those companies died as they failed to innovate and change with time and not because of charging premium for their devices, which is true in most industries ( Kodak as an example).
Apple / Google and other such companies know this very well but have different approaches to it. Infact Google /Facebook is known to buy a large number of startups every year cause they don't wanna be caught out in case they fail to innovate.
