Battle of Video Codecs: x264 vs XviD vs DivX

Which one of these you guys have found to be most effective?
x264 or Xvid or DivX

- Max compression (keeping teh Video bit rate as low as possible)
- Least ditortion from original video
- Fastest encoding.

And yeah which container you guys prefer:
Avi, mkv, ogm, ...... ?

For Compression and Quality and Faster Encoding.

I love Nero Digital a lot thats x264

But the only reason why i dont encode movies in that format is the DVD Players dont play Nero Digital Yet.

So if DVD Player in future roll out with Nero Digital support

Then Nero Digital will be my choice.

Currently Xvid + Mp3 and Xvid + Ac3

Container AVI.

But I love MKV a lot due the gr8 amt of content it can pack in.

hey guys..... is xvid conversion and divx conversion different.... till now i was thinkin both are same..... coz divx when spelled backwards becomes xvid....

xvid is a kinda divx but they are not one and the same..

they fall under the general category of divx but they do have their diffs...

xvid is free and divx is commercial.

xvid doesnt have a official encoder divx has

xvid has an edge over divx in compression and pict qual.

DivX for me ... quality is awesome .. size is quite small ... well not as much as Xvid ... but hey .. why the hell did i get 400 gigs for ??

Xvid And Divx both are MPEG 4 Codecs.

Divx is a Paid codec.

Xvid is a free to use codec.

The name Xvid is derived from Divx only as kau has pointed.

Xvid is reverse of Divx.

As far as quality is concerned i have found Xvid better for Encoding.

[Everyone has a different opinion]

There is one more Amazing Codec called On2 VP6 give it a try it has got better

compression but as many DVD Players dont support it hasnt become more popular.

Give On2 VP6 a try , u can find it in Klite Codec Pack.

Hmmm.

Even I found x264 with AAC in MP4 or MKV container to be best for compression.

Anyway, since I run my Vids on comp, I got no problem
Which all software you guys use for encoding?
I use mencoder with MeWiG gui.
And sometime I use SUPER.

x264 ... rocksss mannnn

You should compare x264 HiDef Movies rips with any Xvid rips, they are sexily differently awesome rips with AAC 6 channel sound..

I also downloaded "30 days of night" matroska codec i think around 5 gb movie...it was 720P totally... sexy..

Although I think world should move on from xvid and divx to x264.. ..Mkv is best deal mate

^Dude!!!
How can u compare an avi movie with a 720p movie???
The resolution, size etc are different!!!

same resolution, same source should be used for comparision..
While its tested on basis of quality, size etc..

h264/x264 are awesome for encoding especially from hidef sources.

i have a 720p version encoded in h264 and a normal xvid version of the same movie and needless to say the h264 version is way better in quality.

will put the vid grab for comparison of both if required once i get home.

lol - ur right! u can compare this easily if u download the same hdtv anime episode - one in h264 and other in xvid. notice the difference in compression in gradients and also near the japanese fonts which are visible in the episode.

but then it should be from the same encoder group.

+1 i meant same re .. its just I downloaded xvid 720p too...and its really not same the way x264. ... I have now stopped downloading xvid movies and I think groups should really now switch to x264....

Though there are many who are really x264 now from BR and HD rips of same size 1.4 gig but better quality than xvid of same size

Some quality comparison between xvid and x264

To compare usual xvid rips with these x264 rips you have to think of some differences first. In xvid rips the dimensions of the original movie have been resized to save bandwidth because of the lower resolution. Through high compression of x264 there is no need to reduce the dimensions of the movie which results in better quality.

U guys arent getting what im saying,
AVI's are released in low quality, low resolution, The avi you see of the episodes are 620*350 at bit rate of 1000kbps, whereas the mkv you see are 720p which mean a resolution of 1280*720 at a resolution of 3500kbps.. Thus the difference in size. So, comparing these wont be correct..And im not even mentoning the bit rate which is much higher in these mkvs..

Wat I am saying is say we take a Blueray dvd and convert both in say avi of xvid and an mkv of h264 of say 620*350, Wat will be better??
Most dvd players are compatible with avi's, thus the quality and size ratio of the mkv's need to be signifiacantly better for some one to switch from avi to mkv!!!
