There is one part i wanted to deal with separately. John Oliver called this a 'fake visit'. Why ?

There is no such thing. Getting Trump to actually sit in a plane that took thirty hours to & back for just 36h stay is no fake visit.

I still cannot comprehend a western leader that agreed to do a lap of honour, hand in hand with another leader.
For $3 Billion worth of more MIC junk, any and all Presidents have done the same in the past, holding hands is just another cringeworthy addition that successfully works on the gullible especially when it is mutually beneficial.
It works its charm by wooing the ignorant and misinformed Indian Americans greased up for the upcoming election as well as the uneducated and illiterate population locally who believe a state visit is some sort of great achievement.
What we need are Apache garbage trucks and Rafale ambulances instead of flushing taxpayer money constantly building an arsenal against an already inferior military.

I agree with all except the last point - majority defence purchases are aimed at countering PLA capabilities.

PLA isn't really a threat at this point in time, both sides know a full blown war would be devastating & have much to lose on the global stage in the form of sanctions if either escalates any confrontation or behaves as the aggressor.
Occasionally one or the other will pull off something silly, one platoon from each side will show up without weapons and shout in their respective languages, emotionally involved people from either side will go hurl racial slurs on forums, retired and irrelevant army officers will go on national tv with silly debates on the usual topics (South China Sea, Tawang, Tibet, etc), opportunist politicians will thump their chest using nationalism to gain some brownie points.

Eventually people get tired and the situation defuses and disappears without any real consequences.
After the Covid-19 debacle, the CCP has bigger things on its plate instead of pissing off its neighbours.

Basically this is the height of any future confrontation with the Chinese.

Pakistan otoh is a rabid dog that's anyways in shambles and has nothing to lose, hence the primary excuse for military spending.

Which western leaders have done a lap of honour with an Indian PM ?

Do you even know what that $3bn is going towards and why it matters ?

Americans have sanctioned Russia. Meaning anyone who buys from them also faces sanctions. Now we've decided we want the S400 (another multi-bn deal) because we cannot make up the shortfall in air defense. If we now also buy from the Americans they are less likely to sanction us. They now want to sell us things which earlier they were unwilling to. Lethal gear. The equipment we get from them helps immensely in securing our position in the region and the wider Indian Ocean. Had the previous govt not slept on the defense side of matters it would be easier. But instead they chose to appease aggressors and the result wasn't reciprocal we were considered as weak. Obviously hard power matters.

It was not clear in the first two years of Trump's presidency whether he regarded India in the same light as Presidents since Bush. If Modi hadn't worked on Trump whatever was achieved earlier would have receded into the background. The Administration gets the value of India but unless Trump sees some $$ he does not care. So we threw him some and retained our earlier wins. He really wanted a trade deal but that will take more work. Since both Modi & Trump are country first this will prove harder to achieve. But a compromise has to be struck. If you want a higher growth rate then you cannot have tariffs at the same time. You have to open up the Indian market to foreign participation.

Trump wants less American involvement around the world. He wants states to grow up and manage their own problems without expecting Americans to get involved. His base is so anti-war that it complicates relations for numerous partners. What was taken for granted in the past no longer is certain. I see this as a good development as stronger powers mean peace as war becomes less likely.

Now if we can pair down the size of the military we will have more to spare for hardware. Nearly 70% of the defense budget goes towards salaries, benefits & pensions. There's people who argue against this approach and advocate more investment in people than hardware.

The term 'fake visit' can mean his visit has no significance. Well, the Paks & Chinese would like that to be true :)

Blah blah blah blah blah just random walls of text regurgitating everything you get from your echo chamber without any thought applied whatsoever or consideration of past events.
The USA is known to work only towards its self interests, everything else is just secondary, just look at their actions in the middle east and elsewhere.

On one hand you say that this was almost a bribe to be in their good books, then how is this a friendly relation ?
This is the same USA that has been arming the Pakis since ages, we would'nt have had to spend so much on defense if they wouldn't have armed their corrupt regimes in the first place. Not only did they sell them all the weapons and aircraft, they have also handed out tens of billions of dollars through USAID that the Pak army gladly siphoned off to be used on training camps, training camps you constantly celebrate the bombing of.
They first create problems and then sell the solutions to those suffering from the problems that they themselves created but yea lap of honour lol, they held hands and kissed so it's ok to buy more junk from them.

It doesn't matter if we bought from the overpriced S-400's, they were proven to be a dud when it was deployed in Syria against the Israeli F-35's. The west wouldn't mind us wasting good money on outdated tech ineffective against their latest gear, the S-500s will be out by the time Russia even delivers the S-400's to us just like the floating pile of junk aircraft carrier they offloaded to us when it became a liability.

Do you follow the PLA and what they are doing ? they're modernising their forces. Fewer people, more capabilities. We can't just sit on our hinds when this happens.

In fact a power imbalance makes conflict more likely as it becomes tempting for the stronger side to teach the other a lesson as occurred in '62. Not a full blown out war but actions can happen that would not otherwise. What sanctions were applied on China as a result of that war where they occupied our land ? keep in mind this is when the US saw China as red and not when Nixon broke the ice. Not a damn thing happened so what makes you so confident the world would have our back should it happen again ? we cannot depend on others to fight our own wars. This point keeps coming back time and again. Our problems are ours alone !!

Instead of the final point of war, think a few steps before. Those are the levels China operates in and applies pressure to grind down opponents. It operates two or three steps below the war threshold. Because war can be so devastating they expect others to comply with their bullying. To some extent it works like say the Philippines and at times it does not like with Vietnam & India. The ultimate is to get what you want without waging a war isn't it. The only response here that counts is to stand up to the bully as happened in Doklam. To do that consistently requires competence & preparedness. Our ability to mobilse with the right equipment to any contingency. On land or at sea. In the mountains or below sea level.

ROE's dictate that neither side is to be armed when interacting. One thing i've noticed over the last decade. It is always the Indian opposition saying the govt isn't doing enough to counter China. Consistent pattern here.

RSTV/LSTV discussions (they're not debates btw, debates occur more on private channels with two opposing sides) are not silly. In fact i'd rather see old hands particularly military & diplomat as they have more experience than just analysts. A good sign of credibility in any discussion dealing with these matters is precisely the presence of these people. The more articulate ones.

Those that do not refer to them are presenting themselves as more knowledgeable which is absurd. You do that on the basis of what ? Your non-experience over their life time career. Hah!

It is the serving personnel who don't talk much and are quite useless to the public when it comes to understanding the current situation. They are not at liberty to speak so i never engage them on topics of current affairs.

Eventually people get tired and the situation defuses and disappears without any real consequences.
After the Covid-19 debacle, the CCP has bigger things on its plate instead of pissing off its neighbours.

Basically this is the height of any future confrontation with the Chinese.
Ideally this is all that should happen. In your video pay attention to the uniforms. Ours are darker, theirs are lighter.

The ROE's are so tight that any soldier disobeying orders is going to get chewed alive by his superiors.

But there are times it can get more heated than that. Its funny how one news channel got it the wrong way. We gave the Chinese a good thrashing in this encounter.

Things had been building up over the previous years since at least 2013. We had a border intrusion that year, followed by the year after. This constant needling.

It was not clear at the outset whether Doklam would end the way it did. We stood our ground and got the Chinese to back off. Full credit to Modi for that.

Then the leaders said we must not allow differences to turn into conflicts. Hopefully it stays that way.

Pakistan otoh is a rabid dog that's anyways in shambles and has nothing to lose, hence the primary excuse for military spending.
We have lost more soldiers due to their support of terrorists than all our wars with them. The only solution here is a second division of that country with a neutering of its army.

PLA will be a threat in the next decade, if we don't have deterrence. They will take it with limited war be it in east china sea or in our borders. We wont use nukes. PLA modernization is alarming, they already have 5th gen aircraft in IOC or may even in FOC which we currently don't have any answer to. They have hypersonic weapons shown for the first time in their parade few months back, while ours is not even in the drawing boards. They are making C17 copies and black hawk copies like how we roll out cars out of the factory. If we don't have a deterrence it will become like syria or kuwait, where the country with a bigger military wants to occupy and deplete the natural resources. Look at Turkey the madman Erdogon wants entire syria. If our military was weak, you can bet the US would have done a coup long time back in the 70s itself and keep a puppet, or china for sure would have taken arunachel pradesh or even J&K for easier trade routes for their BRI .

Apaches helis was need since the paks already have the AH1 cobras, while we do have the russian hind, its optics and avionics is of the 80s. Just look at the difference in thermal imaging of the Russian weapons vs the US , the resolution is just too much in favour to the US thermal imaging. Also by buying US weapons, we are gambling that there wont be any sanctions for the purchase of the S400.

What makes you think we aren't working towards our interests ?

Are you saying Trump coming to India is not in our interest.

This is why i'm questioning this term 'fake visit'. What exactly makes it fake ?

He's just going through the motions and could not care less about US India relations. He's a good actor if so.

On one hand you say that this was almost a bribe to be in their good books, then how is this a friendly relation ?
We've had friendly relations with the US since independence. The US has wanted us on their side since that long. But we refuse to be considered as a junior partner.

You forget they had a tech sanction on us ever since we tested in '74. Importing a supercomputer in the 80s met with much resistance because of the dual purpose nature. We're talking about a supercomputer whose computing power a mobile would exceed these days.

That sanctions regime has persisted right past the nuke deal. For us to bribe them they would have to allow us to buy from them in the first place.

After STA-1 we have access to NATO level gear without being in NATO.

They have not sanctioned China or Turkey for their purchase for S-400. Does it mean it will never happen ? who can say

So we need to strengthen our position against any such nonsense which would set relations back twenty years just because you have a President who might not see value in this relationship.

Last F16 the Americans sold them was 2008. Ever since the Paks have had to source second hand from other countries.
The Americans ensured the Paks cannot load nukes on those F16's.
Those F16's are to be used for self-defence only and not offense operations.

So what is your point here ? we should not buy from the Americans. Then from whom do you want to buy from. The Russians are falling behind in this game. There are some areas they maintain an edge but increasingly Russia is a country that isn't growing and will lose its tech edge.

They first create problems and then sell the solutions to those suffering from the problems that they themselves created but yea lap of honour lol, they held hands and kissed so it's ok to buy more junk from them.
They did not create the problem. They assisted it. And that is politics. Our failure to convince them that we were a better deal. Our failure to not address this problem earlier when presented with several opportunities. What stopped us ending this problem in '65 or '71. Threats that should be breach certain thresholds we would lose our gains up to that point.

We should be learning from the Israelis here. Convincing the Americans that what is in our interest is also in their interest.

It doesn't matter if we bought from the overpriced S-400's, they were proven to be a dud when it was deployed in Syria against the Israeli F-35's.
And ?!? Paks and Chinese don't have F-35's :)

If the Americans won't give the Paks any more F16's why would they give them F-35's !!

Given how close the Paks are to the Chinese its a given the Americans will not trust them not to reveal to the Chinese anything more current.

The west has arms sanctions on China ever since Tianamen in '89.

The west wouldn't mind us wasting good money on outdated tech ineffective against their latest gear, the S-500s will be out by the time Russia even delivers the S-400's to us just like the floating pile of junk aircraft carrier they offloaded to us when it became a liability.
Heh, these arguments go on ad infinitum on def boards. why we bought this and not that. See, specs of this vs that. Arms procurement in India is a very difficult subject to follow because it isn't very transparent as to the decisions that go into it. Particularly this tendency to buy from so many vendors creating a logistical nightmare. It's so we aren't held hostage in case one of the vendors objects to our actions in any theater. Why aren't we building our own. In some cases we are. BMD's for instance are indigenous. We have the ability to intercept at very long ranges. But its the shorter ranges where we lack the expertise.

As to why S-400 and not S-500 i leave for the pro's to answer. I can only speculate as to the reason. Cost? Russia is another partner we need to keep on side so they don't give the Paks an advantage.

The S-400 as AFAIK is for medium to long range. The NASSAMS the Americans want to sell us are for very short to medium range. So for our air defense we are integrating gear from two opponents who object to us integrating their gear. I don't know how we solve that puzzle.

At least we don't have F-35's and i cannot see us getting them so we don't have the same problem as the Turks.

Nuke itself is a deterrent which is why nothing will escalate beyond flying kicks, stone pelting and shouting matches at the border because there's a lot to lose.

You should check out the Mitrokhin archive that came out in 2005. The govt was so penetrated that neither Soviets or Americans wanted to share anything because the other side would find out about it the day after.

The Soviets wanted Indira to ignore the results of the '77 elections and remain in office. Only reason she stepped down is because she did not have the support of the Army.

The Soviets funded at least ten of her candidates in that election. Collusion much, heh.

They had the newspapers in their hands with as many 3000 articles appearing in their favour per year.

Andropov who was KGB head in '69 asking for grants from Brezhnev, saying he could get 20,000 muslims to demonstrate outside the American embassy for just Rs.5000 !!

It does raise questions as to the extent govt has been penetrated since.

So you would rather make accusations without substantiating them ?

Show us where the contradictions are or retract your accusations

Sigh, Both China & India's doctrine are counter value not counter force.

Paks are trying to go counter force but its BS. They know if they send one at us we will unleash on them. There's this prof at MIT called Vipin Narang who wrote a 45pg paper on their tactical nukes and what it means which an ex-mil guy trashed in its entirety. That is the value of experience over academia.

This means unless one of us marches to the other's capital there will be no nukes. The chance of a nuke conflict between China & India is close to zero.

Limited conventional wars are very possible.

China wants a China centric Asia. We are the only obstacle that stands in their way.

S400 is deployed in Hmeimim air base which is close to turkey border, where as Israel launches stand off weapons from Lebanon and there strikes are mostly in syria eastern border and in damascus .
S400 is there to defend the Russian base. Israel was hitting syrian air assets in impunity, but after Syrian ancient S200 downed a F16, they mostly stay well clear off syrian air space. Now syria have got the S300 and they are intercepting a good portion of Israels missiles. IF they do hit targets its mostly by using quite a lot of stand off missiles by a saturation attack, no air defense system in the world can intercept all the missiles.

Look at turkey they are begging Russia to open up the airspace over idlib for manned jets. The s400 is keeping turkey air force inside turkey. Even US warplanes only enter the Russian controlled airspace in syria( which is the entire country south of Euphrates river) with Russian permission, even the F22 operating in syria have luneburg lens installed, so to not give away the F22 true radar signature.

When IAF personal said that the SU30mki radars was able to detect chinese J20 , its because they have those lenses installed.

In other words the F35 never went up against the S-400 as he is stating. Most likely from here

How much of this avoiding a conflict with Russia and how much is because the S-400 can target the F35 and vice versa isn't clear to me. I'd say its the former as it serves neither interest to engage.

Americans informed the Russians when they hit the Syrian base after the chemical weapon attack.

What's to say Israelis & Russians don't have a similar agreement ? Conflict avoidance. Non-interference with each other. Relations between the two aren't bad.

Israelis aren't hitting Assad, they're going after Hezbollah. Why should Russia intervene.

When IAF personal said that the SU30mki radars was able to detect chinese J20 , its because they have those lenses installed.
So much for the hyped up stealth of the J20

The S400 defense system will detect stealth aircraft if the UHF and VHF radar like Nebo-M which is a optional part of the system is deployed. Most reports say that Israel uses lebonases air space to launch missiles. The F35 may also be used but russian electronic signal gathering aircraft and ships are monitoring, the space. As are Russian space assets monitoring visually and in thermal. So once they know a F35 is the general vicinity, they can turn on the UHF and VHF radar, the range of the radar in 360 degree is less, but if its pointed to just one direction like 180 degree coverage the range is increases to 1800 km for a non- stealth aircraft. So they can detect low observable aircraft, if they now the general direction the F35 is. There is a reason US stopped F35 sales to turkey. US already sanctioned China for their S400 purchase.

Israel is not stupid enough to enter S400 engagement range, they do have a agreement with russia. But after the shooting down of the F16 by the S200, the israel pilots used to use civilian and other larger aircrafts as cover, to force the syrian defenses to stand down.

In 2018 Israel pissed russia off when they failed to full fill the agreement, the F16 fired their stand off weapons into syria from the sea, the Syrian S200 system which is really ancient engaged the F16, but the F16 pilot positioned is aircraft in such a way that it matches the altitude and in line of sight of Russian IL20 in reference to the S200 missle which locked on to the F16 (IL20 sniffing the syrian air space of all RF signatures and gathering database of NATO and Israel assets). The S200 which is all analog got confused and it hit the Il20 killing all.

Israel is said to have warned the russian just minutes after the F16 launched strikes, by the time the info went thtrough the chain of command, for the IL20 had little time to manuvour away from the area. Neither did they antcepate the F16 would use Il20 as cover. The S200 missile is old and crude and cannot be aborted in air.

All this was seen by S400 system several hundred km away. It was even able to see the S200 missile heading towards its target. Here is the screen capture of the S400 screen released by the Russian MOD. Which clearly shows that S400 can see even missiles which have low radar signature and also shows what F16 pilots did.

it was after this that Russian provided the syrians with the S300 which Israel for years had requested the Russians not to do so. The location of the S300 is now in the center of lebanese and turkey border.

Now israel just fires from Lebanese air space, Russia has accused Israel pilots using civilin aircraft as cover. Syria cannot engage israel aircraft flying in Lebanese air space because lebanon will be pissed and to the fear of hitting a civilian airline, which is the last thing assad wants. Earlier they used to fly directly from Israel into syria and the Syrians shot the F16I sufa down, its one of the best equipped F16 versions on the planet with state of the art jammers. One F16 crashed in israel, one another damaged jet landed

No the J20 was using radar reflectors, which is why the Su30 was able to detect. Only in wartime do stealth aircraft operate in stealth configuration.

Should we assume only one organisation is responsible for the present bustling 130 crore Indian population?
And should we be proud of it?

US already sanctioned China for their S400 purchase.
That's the thing. China did not get sanctioned for the S400 purchase. They sanctioned the agency under the CMC that took delivery of the S400. All the while saying the sanctions were not China directed but aimed at Moscow.

Now i'm wondering what the Indian equivalent would be. The regiment head that is tasked to use the S400 or will they target something else.

Just see how this info game is being played.

Earlier it was said F35 can evade S400. Now it's S200 damaged an F35 :D

I've been wondering why Israel would use F35's on a mission in Syria when their modded F15 & F16 are already capable.

Tel Aviv wants potential adversaries (chiefly, Iran, Syria, and Hezbollah) to know that its fighters have already proven capable of infiltrating the airspace of neighboring countries, and that its stealth jets could at any moment launch an attack that may go undetected until the first bomb strikes a target.
Psych warfare

F35 is short range among its many other cons. Like price. Still, Israel wants 50 of them.

What Israel is doing in Syria to Hezbollah is pretty much the playbook we will follow in PO J&K & Pak proper

Now as to whether the S300 can deter Israeli strikes in Syria ?

If the system was operational, as some reports indicated, then why were airstrikes able to take place so close to the system?

This also raises questions as to whether the airstrikes show that Syria’s air defense is still ineffective and whether they were designed to send this message
The airstrikes on Jul 1 2019 were wide ranging, in an area over 160 km. in extent from Homs to Damascus. Their extent – and reports in Syria that they killed civilians – raises the stakes. They also appear to show that the S-300 system was either not effective or not yet turned on. It may be operational, but for whatever reason the Syrian regime and its Russian ally have chosen to keep the launchers in the same place, visible to satellites. This is also a message by the Syrian regime that the launchers are out in the open and that everyone knows where they are. With four launchers, the Syrians have the capacity to track up to one hundred targets and ostensibly strike at many of those targets simultaneously with the system.
Open question :)

The claim is the S300 was not switched on at that time.

That report was from Jun. here is one from Jan last

I'm not sure i buy the point vs theater defense argument by the expert referenced within as there were no qualms using the S200 for this purpose

Says its not economical. This also is a sketchy reason
