Hello fellow members, as you can see from my post count I am a very new member to TechEnclave and have come here with the hopes of getting your valuable suggestions on building my first ever computer.

My experience in this field is near to nil but I am always willing to learn, anyway I have been trolling through OCN,TE and various other sites and have actually made choices on some components.

My in-experienced choices:

1. Q: What is your budget?

1. 70K

2. Q: What is your existing hardware configuration (component name - component brand and model)

1. CPU - Intel E4500

2. Motherboard - Intel DQ965GF

3. GPU - MSI 9600GT OC 512MB (Somewhat faulty, only works when underclocked)

4. RAM - Hyundai 1GB

5. Monitor - Wipro WLS171W

6. SMPS - Huntkey 500W

7. (please mention the rest in above format)

3. Q: Which hardware will you be keeping (component name - component brand and model)

1. SMPS - Huntkey 500W (If possible)

4. Q: Which hardware component are you looking to buy (component name). If you have already decided on a configuration then please mention the (component brand and model) as well, this will help us in fine tuning your requirement.

1. CPU - Intel i7 930

2. Motherboard - MSI x58 Pro - E (or any other suggested motherboard)

3. GPU - Sapphire HD5850

4. RAM - G-Skill 2*2

5. Monitor: Samsung 20" 2033

6. Case - CM690 it is!

7. HDD - 500GB (Suggest a brand and price please!)

5. Q: Is this going to be your final configuration or you would be adding/upgrading a component in near future. If yes then please mention when and which component

1. Yes, will upgrade the following within 6 months

2. RAM - 2GB or more.

6. Q: Where will you buy this hardware? (Online/City/TE Dealer)

1. Chennai (Ritchie Street)

2. Open to online purchase

7. Q: Would you consider buying a second hand hardware from the TE market

1. No

8. Q: What is your intended use for this PC/hardware

1. Gaming

2. Browsing

3. Watching HD movies

4. Desktop Processing

5. Downloading about 6-8 hours.

9. Q: Do you have any brand preference or dislike? Please name them and the reason for your preference/dislike.

1. None

10. Q: If you will be playing games then which type of games will you be playing?

1. Strategy - Civilization 4, DoTA

2. Racing - Grid at high settings

3.Crysis I and II

4.CoD:MW II and +

5.Anything at all actually..

Those prices are what I got from www.deltapage.com, I live in Chennai so that is the only place online where I know..are there any other recommended places in chennai to buy components from? All comments and suggestions are welcome!

Hi,

First decide on the overall budget. This would help us to make suggestions based on your budget. Just had few thoughts -

Processor: you have mentioned that you will be over-clocking the CPU, I would recommend to opt for an AMD X4 965 and this will save you atleast 4.5K on the processor. Then you will have to change the MOBO – an AMD one (890 would do).

Graphic card: 5850 is a fantastic card, however if budget is not a concern and if you plan to cut down on the on CPU (opt AMD X$ 965), you can probably go for a 5870.

Rest all are aligned, however a ball-park figure on overall budget would really help.

X58 motherboards gives you max yield when you go for a triple channel memory setup, 3x1GB, 3x2GB, 3x4GB and so on.

If 2x2GB is all you are looking at then stick to socket 1156 (but your upgrade path is limited as this socket will be replaced by 1155) or still better buy AMD. You will not notice any difference in day to day performance.

That Zebronics 600w Platinum is not only going to kill itself, but I am sure it will take down every other component along with it.

DVD writers from Liteon, Pioneer and LG are very robust and sell for 1k, forget SONY.

Also stick to 24" monitors, BenQ G2420 is available for 10.5k.

CPU cooler can be purchased later on if budget is a constraint.

Extend your budget by another 5-10k and you can have i7 X58 and going for a basic keyboard from Logitech/Microsoft will save you another 3.5k which can be used elsewhere. (And in the next 6 months, you can buy a fancy keyboard).

IMHO, you should make the following changes

Display: 24". Great for gaming and movies. BenQ G2420 is going for 10.5k
PSU: Corsair 650W
Case: CM690
Mouse: Logitech MX518

@DarkAngel

Edited :)

@otpsurvive

Well I had my mind set on an i7 and I would seriously feel bad if I had to change that now..but I was also suggested an AMD build(at OCN) which I'll post here below.

Phenom X4 Quad X4 - 965 BE Rs9350

AMD790FX M4A79T-DELUX Rs12900

G-Skill 2*2GB Rs7000

Samsung 22xD Rs1100

Sapphire 1GBx5850 Rs16000

BenQ 24"G2420 Rs10500

Case CM690 Rs4000(?)

PSU Corsair 650/Huntkey 500 Rs ????

HDD 1TBxSeagate(32MB) Rs 4000

Is that above build any good?

Also thanks dreamCatcher and letmein, I have taken your suggestions into consideration..any views on the above build?

He's fine with a 2x2 kit, not necessary to go tri- channel, especially if he really wants to go for the X58 platform but is falling a bit short on RAM. Dual channel works nearly equally well as the third channel does not seem to offer any significant advantages. If this is just a matter of not being aware that the X58 runs tri-channel, and budget is not a problem, then yes, 3x sticks are the way to go.

@OP
If you are sticking to a smaller display, you don't need anything more than a HD 5770.

On the other hand if you must have a 5850, you need to upgrade to a bigger display as per this post:-

imo if you are going for an expensive mobo then definitely get the Corsair 650 or greater so that there are no problems in adding a second video card later.

why go the i7 way when your main purpose is gaming? i5 and the i7 chips perform the same in gaming. i think you are better off with an i5, or even better an phenom II 965BE if you want something future proof .

i know you have your mind set on an i7 but do consider whether if its extra cost is worth the performance gain? i think not.

instead spend the money somewhere else, maybe get a 5870.:lick:( atleast then you can hope to play crysis 2 on high settings.:| )

Can you explain how the Phenom II 965BE is future proof and the i7 not? I am new to the PC Building scene and therefore do not know much about the technical aspects :ashamed:

the i7 930 is based on the lga 1366 socket, which might be end of line.

intel's next architecture- sandy bridge will be based on sockets 1156 and 1356.

link- Intel Sandy Bridge (microarchitecture) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

amd's am3 socket has a few more years ahead of it. both bulldozer and thuban, amd's newer architecture will be based on am3. so if you are going to buy a new processor after a year or two you don't have to change your motherboard, maybe just do a bios update.

Okay then I have these two builds in mind,

Processor: i7-930 / 2.8 GHz ----Rs14550
MOBO: MSI X58 Pro-E ----Rs11300
RAM: G-skill 2X2GB ----Rs7500
GPU: 1GB Sapphire HD 5850 ---Rs15800
Display: BenQ G2420----Rs10500
HDD: 500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ---Rs2300
PSU: Corsair 650W : ---Rs6000
Case: CM690.. ---Rs4500
DVD: Samsung22xD ---Rs1100
Total: Rs73000

and the AMD build:

Processor: Phenom X4 Quad X4 - 965 BE Rs9350
MOBO:ASUS M4A79T Deluxe Rs13025
RAM: G-Skill 2*2GB Rs7500
DVD: Samsung 22xD Rs1100
GPU: Sapphire 1GBx5850 Rs15800
Display: BenQ 24"G2420 Rs10500
Case: CM690 Rs4000(?)
PSU: Corsair 650 Rs6000
HDD: 1TBxSeagate(32MB) Rs 4000

Total: Rs71275

So thats just a difference of ~Rs2k, which one do you vote for? Please vote by typing +1 Intel or +1 AMD as I can't add a poll now..and also mention why you voted for either if you can please!
Thanks

Okay so I went ritchie street and got the prices of the above stuff from sethia infotech, here are the prices they gave me:

1. Processor: i7-930 / 2.8 GHz = 14350/-

2. MOBO: MSI X58 Pro-E = 10800/-

3. RAM: G-skill 2X2GB 1600Mhz = 7100/-

4. GPU: 1GB Sapphire HD 5850 = 17500/-

5. Display: BenQ G2420 24 = 10900/-

6. HDD: 500GB/1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 = 2275/4100

7. PSU: Corsair 650W = 6400/-

8. Case: CM690 = 4500/-

9. DVD: Samsung22xD = 1050/-

10.Mouse: Logitech MX518 = 1450/-

11.Keyboard: MicroSoft X6 / Razer Lycosa = 3200/4350

I went to R.C Automation too and they gave me prices which was a tad bit lower than the above but then the guy at Sethia told me that R.C has gives the prices without the 4% tax just to make me believe I was getting stuff cheaper..which turned out to be true. Anyway any idea if the above prices are okay with the current market? Or should I try another shop?

id suggest the following

Processor: Phenom II X4 - 960T BE Rs9xxx ( Expected next week)

MOBO:Gigabyte 890GPA-UD3H - Rs 9800

RAM: G-Skill 2*2GB 1600 DDR3 - Rs7500

DVD: Samsung 22xD Rs1100

GPU: Sapphire 1GBx5870 Rs24000

Display: BenQ 24"G2420 Rs10500

Case: CM690 Rs4000(?)

PSU: Corsair 650 Rs6000

HDD: 1TBxSeagate(32MB) Rs 4000

Total - About 75-76 ( ull have to wait a week , and the 960T is a quad but will unlock to a hexacore even if it doesent its still a good buy)

The hexas should be available for 12-13k , this would kill an i7 anyday in terms of performance n VFM

@Sarsh, I think you should wait for a week or two. AMD's Thuban processors will be here and even if they are not to your liking, you may get better rates on Intel CPUs.

- Also, instead of 24 inch 16:9 monitor, you can have a look at quality 22 inch 16:10 monitor like 2209WA. You will lose two inches sideways but will gain some height. Also you will lose HD resolution but will gain better and more vivid colours and superior viewing angle.

- For your needs, 5850 is a very good card... it's better VFM as compared to 5870.

- For keyboard, look for Microsoft X4. It's cheaper than X6 and better.

- Don't spend too much money on blazing RAM. Anything around 1333 MHz is good enough. If the difference is few hundred rupees, by all means go for faster RAM but don't spend a fortune on getting 1600MHz or 1800MHz RAM. The difference in day-to-day computing is not too high.
