Hi all,

I'm looking to build a new PC for general home use. Main usage will be media consumption (youtube, movies etc), occasional MS Office and Tally usage and internet browsing.

Questions

1. What is your budget?
INR 30K max. I cannot stretch beyond this.

- What is your existing hardware configuration (component name - component brand and model)

This is a new PC build.

- Which hardware will you be keeping (component name - component brand and model)

NA

- Which hardware component are you looking to buy (component name). If you have already decided on a configuration then please mention the (component brand and model) as well, this will help us in fine tuning your requirement.

Monitor - 22-24 inch good for watching movies with good viewing angles.
120GB SSD with an additional 1TB Hard Drive will be great.

- Is this going to be your final configuration or you would be adding/upgrading a component in near future. If yes then please mention when and which component

This will be the final build.

- Where will you buy this hardware? (Online/City/TE Dealer)

Bangalore, SP Road.

- Would you consider buying a second hand hardware from the TE market

No

- What is your intended use for this PC/hardware

* Browsing
* Desktop Processing
* Watching HD movies
* Casual gaming

- Do you have any brand preference or dislike? Please name them and the reason for your preference/dislike.

CPU - Intel preferred over AMD.
Motherboard - Asus is preferred. Gigabyte is fine in case of budget constraints.
PSU - Seasonic or Antec
RAM - GSkill

- If you will be playing games then which type of games will you be playing?

Casual old games like NFS, FIFA, Cricket.

- What is your preferred monitor resolution for gaming and normal usage

Gaming - no preference.
Desktop - 1920x1080

- Are you looking to overclock?

No

- Which operating system do you intend to use with this configuration?

* Windows 7/10 64-bit.

I don't see the need for a dedicated graphics card.

Let me know what would be a good build which would run without hassles for the next 3-4 years.

Thanks for posting the config.

Since this config overshoots the budget slightly, I was thinking of these options:

  1. Will a Pentium G4400 and a corresponding motherboard not suffice for this kind of usage? In case it is feasible, can you please let me know which motherboard works best with a Pentium G4400?
  2. In case the Pentium G4400 performance is not sufficient, can i save some money by going for a Core i3 4th generation processor and corresponding motherboard? I guess RAM will also be a DDR3 version. Which 4th generation processor and motherboard to go for?
  3. Do i need a 450W PSU or can i make do with a 350W PSU?
  4. Are there cheaper options for the cabinet? Around INR2000 price-point?

Buy a laptop. If you still want to get a desktop, go with @bssunilreddy 's recomendation.

Just to explore this also as an option, which laptop would you recommend around the INR30k price-point?

Just go with the suggested config but replace the cabinet with zebronics which comes for 1k and replace 22inch monitor with 20inch monitor that is BenQ DL2020 20" LED which comes for 5.5k
So your PC comes under 29k

There is a Acer laptop which is about 31K, comes with 6th gen i3. If you go with 4th gen i3, you can get the price to 25-27k ish. These are with Linux. With a Windows 10 Home, expect the price to increase by 3-4K.

Else for 23K there is the Dell Vostro 3558.

~From Sunil's configuration, you may cut down on a cabinet. A local one would save you 1500 around.
~For processor, stick to i3.
~BenQ GW2255 is around 7350 on Amazon. This would save you another 1500.
~I would not advice to tinker around with PSU.

Above changes would bring down cost to 30.5k.

On laptop front, you can get one with i3 5th gen for near 25k mark. Maybe you would need to spend another 2k for OS via MSDN keys. For getting i3 6th gen, you might have to spend couple of grands extra. Laptops would have 768p screens against 1080p of desktop. Also laptops would be with 4GB RAM against 8GB of desktop.

If not gaming, Pentium should be good enough. And you don't plan to buy a dedicated graphic, so I think i3-6100 should be good idea than G4400 or i3 4150.
"Good viewing angle" means you're looking for IPS panel and 1080p, LG 22MP58 costs 8100/-
What's the point of going for a motherboard with no HDMI output when you have a monitor which can support HDMI, so I think H110M S2PH makes sense - 5750/-

These will make the bottom number to 33k which is more than your budget. You can either increase your budget to get these or you can compromise on few things and go for the ones fit in your budget.

A 20 inch monitor won't suffice. I'll consider the BenQ GW2255. Thanks for the suggestions on the cabinet.

Having seen the different laptop options on Flipkart, i feel that there will be a compromise in performance with laptops in this price range. I don't see mobility being needed at all so i think i'll stick to a desktop.

Thanks for your inputs. I think i'll go with a 1k-1.5k price range cabinet and also look into the BenQ GW2255 monitor. That will bring it closer to my max budget. I think it's worth stretching another 0.5k-1k.

I think i'll consider the points made in this thread and arrive at the best compromise between price and components.

I'll post the final specs once decided, in this thread. Thanks to all of you for providing your valuable suggestions!
