At the CES 2013 , the USB 3.0 Promoter Group has announced an updated specification to the current USB 3.0 standard which will offer speeds of up to 10Gbps, double compared to the current 5Gbps.

The updated specification will require new connectors and chipsets to enable double speeds , but they will be backward compatible with current USB hardware.

'With USB technology continuing to be the data and power delivery path of choice across personal computing and consumer electronics, we are always looking ahead to how to best improve user experience and connectivity performance,' claimed Brad Saunders, USB 3.0 Promoter Group chair, at the announcement. 'Doubling SuperSpeed USB performance will be especially beneficial for emerging USB docking and storage applications.'

This speed will make USB 3 compete better with the Thunderbolt standard which also offers 10Gbps speeds. The SuperSpeed USB update is going ujnder industry review and it is expected to complete by the mid of 2013 and we should see hardware following the new standard in about a year.
