Does factory reset from recovery mode in android erases the external storage also?

I want to erase/ factory reset only the internal storage.

A Factory Reset will not modify or erase anything on the SD card. Only the internal data will be deleted after doing the factory reset. Just backup your internal data or sync to google drive before doing factory reset. You can sync your contacts, important pictures to google drive so when you are done with the factory reset procedure, so you can easily merge your contacts and pictures from Google Drive.
