Get a D5200 with a prime lens(35mm). Except 1-2 extra features with d5300 you wont get anything else. Both will give same picture quality and DSLR is all about lenses.

Look online for great deals.

Since Indoor and low light are an important requirement and you are also open to compacts, do keep the Fujifilm X series in consideration
The damn thing has made me leave my DSLR body and lenses gathering dust

PS: The 5300 has an upgraded sensor over the 5200 (it does away with the low-pass filter) thus yielding marginally better low light perf

DSLR and compact won't go together. If you want DSLR, you got to live with the bulkiness. If you emphasis more on size and weight, better look at mirrorless cameras.

D5300 - Better low light performance, better IQ, 60fps FHD video, GPS, WiFi, better battery life...
700D - Cheaper, touch screen, magic lantern, built in flash commander...

For casual/home use IQ and low light performance of D5300 is not that massive difference over 700D.

Weigh your priorities and do a bit of research before buying.

For a casual (and even some pro) users, the lines between DSLR /CSC/Mirrorless are quite blurred
Hell, you even get full frame P&S camera these days
