Storage Solutions DVD drive not detected.

My DVD drive had been giving me problems for quite some time now. It used to eject only after 15 or 20 button presses if there's no media in the tray. If there is a media in the tray it used to eject in 2 or 3 button presses.

Now it's completely conked off. The drive is not ejecting and under my computer it is not even detected. It's an OEM drive for a Dell Inspiron 531s.

What to do? If there is no solution can you guys recommend a suitable upgrade.

Edit: Is Lightscribe recommended?

Lightscribe DVD Drive is certainly recommended over Dell OEM

& most of Dell OEM drives I came across (~6) were defective :(

however you may try re-installing / changing the driver files !!!

first just un-install DVD drive thru device manager along with drivers .

then remove drive ; clean contacts ; put back ; re-start the system ...

Drivers have nothing to do with the tray not opening. Its a clear problem with the tray mechanism. Most of the time if the drive is not getting detected, it could either be a problem with the power cable or the IDE/SATA cable.

Either contact dell to replace/repair the drive or get a new drive from the market.

alternatively, you can try this :

1) Close all open programs

2) Click on Start, Run, and type REGEDIT and press Enter

3) Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

* SYSTEM

* CurrentControlSet

* Control

* Class

* {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

4) This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

* UpperFilters

* LowerFilters

* UpperFilters.bak

* LowerFilters.bak

5) If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

6) After deleting the keys, close the Registry Editor

7) Reboot your computer

8) Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

@ Anish, I tried doing that. Apart from giving me a warning about loss of system stability nothing happened.

@ seshu, would try your method.
