Flash Website Help

Well I am making a website for my college's cultural fest and this is my first time. I would like to know the following:

1. How big should my swf file be? (as in size ,not res) It is about 2 MB right now maybe i can get it down to 1.6 MB by some tweaking, is this too much?

2.Also is there a way to not preload everything but load stuff as and when needed???

We make flash work for our cliens, we try to keep it below 300KB. Coz tht means on a 256K connection, it should load in 10 seconds. Everything, like music pictures etc is loaded externally.

Also one more advice to reduce size, is dont use tweens, but use code. Check out kirupa.com and tons of other tutorials for how to make good flash sites.
 
Well mine is obviously huge then considering it will take atleast 5 times you stated, (approx 1 minute) to load.

But mine is a website for a cultural festival, which as a result has many graphics and effects, n such websites are generally pretty big i think.

Anyways is this not too big an issue or should i really consider making huge changes?

I don't really ahve much time.
 
A heavy website is strongly not recommended if you are targeting Indian visitors. Most people in India are on 256 Kbps connection or even less.

Try using flash in parts. Like make header part in flash, sidebar content in flash, This will reduce the website size.
