Lucas Rocha, on the behalf of all GNOME developers worldwide, has just announced the release of GNOME 2.28.0. GNOME 2.28 is the last release prior to GNOME 3.0 that is due out next March, with some of the improvements in this version being a GNOME Bluetooth module, the Empathy instant messaging client has picked up more features, the Epiphany web-browser has finally switched to the WebKit rendering engine over Gecko as the default choice, improved audio settings support, and much more.

GNOME 2.28 is the latest version of the GNOME Desktop: a popular, multi-platform desktop environment for your computer. GNOME's focus is ease of use, stability and first-class internationalization and accessibility support. GNOME is Free and Open Source Software and provides all of the common tools computer users expect of a modern computing environment, such as e-mail, groupware, web browsing, file management, multimedia and games.

Probably one of the most annoying problems in older GNOME versions was the lackluster Bluetooth support, with the advent of 3G-capable mobile phones that can serve as modems and smart devices capable of rich content. Previously, the management of connections to that kind of devices was handled by the Bluetooth Applet, a notification area icon with few features and low configurability, and without explicit support for data connections through the mobile network. The new GNOME Bluetooth application included in GNOME 2.28.0 fixes many of those gripes, letting you enjoy your wireless keyboard and mouse as well as managing your mobile phone, with minimal fuss. Even more, it integrates with NetworkManager to allow for 3G connectivity, quickly and easily.

Support for sub woofers contorls

Whats next ? Gnome 3.0 will be either debut with 2.30 or 2.32. That will be decided after November so hold on a bit :p The lously gnome can get refurbished :p
