The government plans to amend the IT law to increase penalty on apps and websites that are unable to control fake news and child pornography. Amendments will include an extreme provision of taking down apps and websites in violation.

The move comes days after senior officials of the IT ministry met representatives from top global social-media and internet companies and sought their views on proposed rules that would, among other things, help trace the origin of unlawful content. This is one of the key areas of dispute between the government and companies.

“We need accountability and power to heavily penalise the companies in case of violations, or refusal to cooperate,” a senior government official told TOI, on condition of anonymity.

I don't know man, if we go down this route what is stopping them from taking down sites against government, against powerful people and such. Which is what it will be mostly used for, the cynical part of me thinks.
as they say,

"The road to hell is paved with good intentions"

removing porn, catching terrorists are the usually the go-to examples given for curbing freedom and enroaching on individual privacy

Not like they're already not blocking a shitload of sites. Some completely unnecessary that too...

Especially those LIKE APP soft porn ads while playing around!!!!
You dig deep enough into apps like tiktok/like some other chinese apps which people are using, you'll find many disturbing things

This is what happens when you manage something you know nothing about. Nothing new.
