Storage Solutions Help : Can Laptop DVD Slot be used as Primary HDD ??

Yep, no reason it can't be used that way. It may be a slower speed SATA port (E.G. SATA II instead of SATA III) in some laptops but that won't make a huge difference anyway.

I've done that once or twice for a client who had a bad SATA port on a laptop motherboard. Just moved the drive over, and it booted right up.

Ok, but very useful for Dual OS user

Yes. You can use it as a primary or, secondary HDD. I use it as secondary / storage HDD.
Set the boot order in the BIOS.
Check the dimensions thoroughly before ordering.
Create a bootable USB (8GB el cheapo SanDisk pen drive would do) for the laptop. Once DVD drive is not present it would become tricky if something goes wrong and the laptop doesn't boot.

I did that on my Lenovo with Samsung 850 Evo as secondary storage , works fine . The ssd compensates for the sata 2 interface , in terms of speed .

Hello members and Experts,

I wanted to do this thing for Long Time - But back out due to if mismatch of Caddy Size. My Laptop is Compaq 15 s001tu (G8D87PA) and below is the link of the hardware maintenance guide from HP : http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04162986

Please help me to choose which Caddy SIZE is compatible with above mentioned Laptop - I like to install a 250GB 750 EVO on the primary slot and move the 500 GB default HDD drive to this DVD slot.
