Zotac, Gigabyte, ASUS have listed their price 57% to 87% higher than the price announced at the Nvidia launch event.

  • Zotac asking for U$D +411 (+59%) extra!
  • Gigabyte asking for U$D +396 (+57%) extra!
  • ASUS asking for U$D +411 (+59%) extra!
also
  • ASUS non-Founder's Edition asking for U$D +525 (+87%) extra!
(This is epic to see non-Founder's Edition is more expensive than Founder's Edition)

They are flooding the Amazon product pages of Zotac, Gigabyte, ASUS with 1 STAR reviews and negative comments.

This is the pricing for the "Baade Baap Ki Aulaad" crowd who will buy the card nonetheless at these inflated prices for bragging rights.

Don't lose your sleep as the prices will stabilize once this crowd has thinned out.:cigar::cigar:

As for myself I am waiting to see if the RX 480 is as good as they are saying in which case bye bye GTX 770....

It's a basic volume problem

A good example would be entry level SLRs which typically used to cost 30% higher than US till recently
Today most entry level models cost 10-20% less than the US as volumes picked up massively in India in recent years

GPUs on the other hand are a different a story... The limited population that enjoys gaming may have risen in the last few years but a larger percentage has shifted over to consoles so the market for high end GPUs in India is now very niche

Its not just a volume problem. GPU prices have been kept artificially bloated in India for a long time. Lower to mid rage GPU's have decent demand, but they too are priced outrageously in India.

Remember when many prospective buyers started importing from US instead of buying in India, the Indian prices also became competitive for a short while. I remember the GPU's in the AMD HD4xxx series and HD6xxx series have had fairly competitive prices in India.

But distributors are back to their old games again.

Exactly! Middlemen are taking too much commissions. Even gfx card companies outsource their RMA's here. Sick of this pathetic situation.

And AMD gfx are priced atrociously. I don't know for sure Its coz of Nvidia monopoly or simply a volume problem

Even the consoles cost almost twice as much as they do in India.

Here's something, if you blame it on the distris the distris will in turn blame it on the taxes. A rep. of one T1 Taiwanese company told me so. He also said that the profit margin is not as huge as people make it out to be.
This seems to be true because like I said on the other thread the GTX1080 costs around $900 in some countries going as high as a whopping $1000. Unless you have evidence that the distris in those countries also rack in a huge profit margin. For pricing of AMD's new cards you can email your thoughts to the management and see how they will deal with it. I mean it doesn't harm trying right?

8471.80.00 0% No sales tax

Base Import duty on Graphics card as per the list is nil.

This is the remaining things that can be imposed.

  • Landing charges (1% CIF)
  • Countervailing duty (12.5% (CIFD + Landing charges))
  • CEX (Education & Higher Education CESS) (3% Countervailing duty)
  • CESS (3% (Duty + CEX (Education & Higher Education CESS) + Countervailing duty))
  • Additional Countervailing Duty (0% (CIFD + Landing charges + Countervailing duty + CESS + CEX (Education & Higher Education CESS)))

Countervailing duties are meant to be a protectionist mechanism to prevent damage to local manufacturing from cheaper imported products. Technically, Countervailing duty should not apply to Graphics cards in India since there is no local manufacturing of such items.

india is charging Countervailing duty of 12.5% . many other country don't do that. what the point of charging for anti dumping for graphics card. india is starved of graphics card. just ask any youngers.

what the point of educational cess. nobody studies in government schools. Just go to village and see it. Even if they are studying, its of almost no use. There are many engineering degree holders in india who don't have jobs. Its only government school teachers making killing on this money while teaching nothing.

instead they should be charging internet cess and provide free internet to students. internet will teach them better.

slight OT nitpicking - not all villages and their schools are bereft of students. although a lot's still left to be covered and overhauled, the edu cess does get utilised towards education, meal plans, study material, etc (under utilised by state govts though am sure)....teaching through internet will also require infra (and money). your idea is welcome. few schools in some small towns/villages are already imparting edu through the web, but it cant fully replace the need of quality teachers at some levels/stages. a 'hybrid' approach is needed. and a lot of ground is still to be covered.

Doesn't countervailing duty only apply to used goods?
Preventing dumping of 'new' goods seems silly.

But then this is India, we like to tax incoming wealth to fill babu pockets.

Countervailing duties are not just to prevent dumping. Countervailing duties are a protectionist mechanism to counter import and sale of products at lower cost than the domestic manufacturers of the same kind of product. The later part is what is important and not so much as the dumping.

By levying this duty, the price of the imported product is bumped up to be closer or costlier than the domestic made product and to some extent giving an edge and in some cases keeping the prices artificially higher to favor the local manufacturers.

There are no local manufacturers of graphics cards and this duty does not even make sense

a lot of cess that gets collected lies unused.
using those money to provide free internet to poor student will help them a lot. Also this will cause high speed internet to reach every corner of india which will benefit every person of india. It will help us also because we will get better internet speed at low cost. So everyone gains.

As usual bad tax planning and no revisions to think through things. Why put a protectionist tax on a device which is not even made here. This nation is such a mess. At times I wonder when and how this logic is built into our systems. Our ministers are plain dumb.
