Laptops Laptop Stutters with very slow performance

Hi,
I would have a Dell Inspiron 1420. It has recently started to behave very strangely. It takes long even for simple commands and hangs when the mouse is moved around. Defragmentation was carried out but not much success. Recently formatted it. But issue remains unsolved. Is there a problem with the HDD. Though Defragler didn't find any issues.
Looking for some solutions.

Does it behave the same way when not connected to the mains? If yes, how about when the battery is removed, but powered via the mains?

I have seen similar problems where either of a bad power adapter or battery was the cause especially in situations where the HDD checks out fine.
