Linux Linux for the lesser PCs

Have an old PC at home and wondering which OS to install on it? Try Linux!

When one see's current (popular) linux distro's like Fedora, Suse, Mandrake etc., it seems that current linux distributions require modern hardware to run.

The linux kernel as such supports a wide variety of old hardware, and can run on very little RAM. Unfortunately, many distro's and software like KDE and Gnome have bloated up and run slowly on older hardware.

And thats where these two "lo-fat linux" articles come in -

And,

http://users.netwit.net.au/~pursang/lofat2.html

The first one talks about using lighter software which runs fast, and the other talks about tweaking your distribution for performance :)

I managed to have a very fast and extremely usable distro on my ancient PC. This is the software I use -

Distro - Slackware 10.1
Window Manager - IceWM
Browser - Opera, Dillo
Mail Client - Sylpheed
P2p client - gtk-gnutella
Terminal Emulator - rxvt

And some other popular software like GAIM, GIMP, Abiword etc.

You could also think of going for a faster linux distro. Three good ones -

Slackware - http://www.slackware.com
Vector Linux - http://www.vectorlinux.com
Deli linux - http://delilinux.berlios.de

If you are pretty familiar with linux, slackware is a great choice as the control it gives you over the system is second only to Linux From Scratch :)
