It has been only few days since Microsoft unveiled its latest operating system Windows 8 and it has been hit by a patent lawsuit regarding Live Tiles which are a part of Windows 8 UI.

SurfCast, a company about which many would have never heard of, has filed a lawsuit against Microsoft in a U.S. District Court in Maine claiming that Live Tiles used in Windows 8 infringes on SurfCast's patent.

The patent no 6,724,403 in question was filed in October 2000 and granted in April 2004. The concept of the patent was described as a "broadband interface" that takes "several streams of content and integrates them into a single screen environment, enabling users to manage all of these streams at the same time."

The company has claimed that Microsoft had knowledge about the patent and it wants Microsoft to pay SurfCast all damages caused by the patent infringement.

Microsoft has said in a statement that it is confident that the claims are without merit.
