Motorola Inc. said Friday that it has expanded its research operations in India with the opening of a new lab.
The research facility officially opened in Bangalore, and augments the company's existing Indian research and development infrastructure of more than 1,700 software engineers, officials with Schaumburg, Ill.-based, Motorola said.
"Motorola believes India is the ideal market for applied research and software development," Padmasree Warrior, executive vice president and chief technology officer for Motorola in India, said in a statement.
The Motorola Labs in India will conduct research in converged networks, autonomic networking, enterprise applications, embedded systems and physical sciences. The research is expected to help Motorola achieve its strategy of providing "seamless mobility," which the company defines as uninterrupted access to information, entertainment and communication.
While the new facility is Motorola's first applied research lab in India, the company has had research facilities in the country since 1991. Motorola increased its research and development spending in India to $85 million this year from $50 million in 2002, the company said.
