[#netneutrality] AIB's video: Save The Internet

No you don't.. It was the previous attempt by Airtel to separate out VoIP data as an extra pack that fell under that category
This is what causes the ambiguity. They tried it then pulled back. People are impugning them on the basis of the earlier action.

So why did airtel pull back ?

a stink was created, bad publicity etc. Not sure if that was enough. I cannot see any legal problem here. The govt did not stop them.

But driving away potential customers is no way to run a business. Would they like to do it ? sure. Is it viable ? will it lead to more profit ? initially maybe but I suspect it will reduce consumption. Not good. People will employ workarounds, a new app comes out same story again. Its not smart to fight your customers nor is it good to have them fight your restrictions. It encourages people to dump you and creates a space for competitors to exploit. In which case the cartel idea goes out the window. You only need to look at the oil market to see how well a cartel is working. It worked in the 70s and that was it.

So can we say airtel pulled back because it was not good for business ? who can challenge this ..

You are mixing up totally different things. Regulation and censoring are not the same.
censorship is regulating what can be said. AIB got into trouble for causing offence, allegedly.

causing offence is censorship over what you can say. its somebody lording over and saying you cannot do this.[DOUBLEPOST=1429188738][/DOUBLEPOST]
^^ They did not pull it back but deferred it temporarily until TRAI came up with its verdict.
If it does not make business sense then how does TRAI saying anything change things ?

TRAI getting involved is to determine from the govts pov whether the govt itself stands to make any money. They love to tax whatever they can.Now this used to be the case before India followed the ITU rules that said same charge is applied for call abroad and originating from inside. late nineties. Lots of hue and cry but in the end the govt relented. Earlier calling abroad from here was a great deal higher than the other way around. No longer. Trying to do this with whatsapp etc is trying to resurect the past. How to do it.

What airtel are doing is looking at their traffic logs and saying Aha, x% of data is from this or that app. So lets charge for it. Things can change in the future. They are back to step one.

96% of their customers are prepaid, so very a la carte menu. Who is going to add top up packs for this or that app which when taken cummulatively work out to more than before. Shooting themselves in the foot.

TRAI's Chairman creating unnecessary controversy.

“There are passionate voices on both sides of the debate. And if that was not enough, there’s a corporate war going on between a media house and a telecom operator which is confounding already difficult matters,” Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) chairman Khullar told The Indian Express.

Initially i thought this guy was batting for net neutrality, But with this statement everyone should get an idea to whom this guy sold out.

who is the corporate house he mentions ? why these innuendos being dropped.

In terms of actual action taken though, while companies like NDTV have already pulled out of Internet.Org, Times of India said it supports net neutrality but will withdraw from internet.org only if its direct competitors like India Today, NDTV, IBNLive, NewsHunt, and BBC pull out. They are reportedly also appealing to Jagran, Aaj Tak, Amar Ujala, Maalai Malar, Reuters, and Cricinfo to withdraw from zero rate schemes.

NDTV's coverage has been utterly crap on this topic.

His point is valid, these shrill voices are hogging the limelight. Can't let them dictate the pace and tenor of this discussion. I've already taken quite a few shots at them :D

AIB are bunch for hypocrites and they don't really care for Net Neutrality. Facebook and Google both violate NN. So when some guys approached them for boycotting FB and YouTube for a day, they denied it. The plan was to boycott FB and YT, by deactivating their pages/channels. And also doing an announcement prior to it. Since AIB makes money from YT and heavily relies on FB, they denied it.
