So overall, its a 3G Modem + Wireless Router combined, with inbuilt battery offering upto 4 hours backup for just Rs 3150. This has the same features as the Huawei E5 (except for the display) All similar devices seems to be priced at around 5k while I just skimmed through eBay India.

Edit : The price has increased, lowest on eBay for a new piece is $55 and the ShopAbroad Promo also expired.

Varkey I'd be glad if you can post back with some results of the range and ease of connectivity/usage.

I was planning to pick up a MiFi unit sometime back but dropped the idea since it was expensive! 5k and upwards was what I was told of the ongoing prices of these units. This looks like a vfm deal indeed.

Considering the size of the device, the range is pretty awesome, it covers my entire apartment (around 1100 sq ft). Speed drops a bit, but even at the farthest location I tried, I was getting around 2-3 Mbps on BSNL 3G (Max I got was around 4Mbps)

And its pretty easy to use, once the APN is set up using the Web UI, just press the power button and within 4-5 seconds it will be connected, indicated by the LED color and you can start browsing.

Initially faced a bit of a problem as the AT&T firmware wasn't so great and it wouldn't let you attach the device to the PC to act as a modem, so I switched to the Novatel Generic firmware which seemed a bit buggy and random device freezes. I later upgraded to a newer firmware made for Bell and everything seems to be alright now. You will lose the GPS functionality and DLNA server by switching from the AT&T firmware, but I didn't need either so it was fine.

doing this on device like iphone or android will suck the battery hard.

so when you put this one device as mifi for all your device, you get connectivity for all and your mobile battery does not die that quickly.

this is my take.

I tried photon and atrix on mobile hotspot.

both batteries die within 2 hrs or so.

so i prefer this way out.

# varkey,

can you share that bell firmware link.

any screenshots possible?

thanks.

Sorry for so many questions, but do you have a dedicated Sim for this, which you don't use for calls? What kind of a plan are you on for the data?

Yes, I have a dedicated sim for it. Currently I am using BSNL 3G - 6GB for Rs 750

with this, can you plug in any sim and put apn ?

does it work as expected?

two minutes config?

Yes, any GSM sim and you can enter the APN details through the Web UI. Ya it works as expected, I used it for about 2 hours and battery level is 2 bars out of 4.

Configuring it takes hardly two minutes

1. Insert the sim, battery

2. Switch it on, connect to the Wifi network

3. Enter the APN details

4. Connect

From the next time you just need to press the power button, wait 4-5 seconds and you will be able to start browsing.

nice find. i was looking forward to buy the Huawei Mi-Fi but it was overpriced. another solution would be portable router+usb modem+portable usb power supply .

can this work directly from AC if the battery runs out?
