open-source software vendors are training their sights on business-intelligence software

After making big gains in the operating-system and application-server markets, open-source software vendors are training their sights on business-intelligence software. Last week, a pair of startups debuted open-source products for reporting and data-analysis applications, while an established business-intelligence software vendor embraced the MySQL open-source database.

Greenplum Corp. launched a test version of its DeepGreen open-source data-warehousing software based on the PostgreSQL open-source database. DeepGreen, aimed at departmental and data-mart business-intelligence apps, is free; Greenplum will sell services to support the product. Greenplum is developing a high-end data-warehousing system called DeepGreen MPP, which it will release later this summer. The company also revealed the Bizgres project to enhance PostgreSQL for business-intelligence applications.

JasperSoft Inc. unveiled its JasperReports open-source report-writing software in a challenge to market leaders such as Cognos Inc. and Business Objects SA. The company also debuted its proprietary JasperDecisions report-aggregation portal software.

But Business Objects isn't running from the open-source wave. The company last week disclosed a deal with MySQL AB to embed the open-source MySQL database into its BusinessObjects XI software.
