Berkshire Hathaway takes Rs 25-billion stake in Paytm

Berkshire Hathaway Inc has picked up a Rs 2500 crores ($356 million) stake in the parent of digital payments firm Paytm, a source said, its first investment in an Indian startup as it forays into the financial payments sector.

Why is the timing of Warren Buffett’s investment in Paytm important?

India has turned into a battleground for the world’s biggest firms trying to stamp their dominance in the digital payments market. Backing of renowned investors such as Buffett could help Paytm differentiate itself from the crowd. Over the past year, Paytm’s near-monopoly status in digital payments has been challenged by Google’s Tez, Amazon Pay, Flipkart’s PhonePe and the centre’s UPI-based BHIM app. Newer players such as WhatsApp payments service may also pose a significant challenge.

Today, Alphabet Inc.’s Google said it is teaming with HDFC Bank Ltd, ICICI Bank Ltd, Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd and Federal Bank Ltd to offer instant, pre-approved loans to customers “right within Google Pay in a matter of seconds”.

Any turning points?
The centre’s demonetisation move in November 2016 was Paytm’s biggest turning point. Investor interest in Paytm rose after that, boosting online transactions.

Why does Paytm attract so much interest from investors?

Paytm retains a huge brand loyalty among consumers in the digital payments economy. It has entered the e-commerce sector with Paytm Mall and launched its own payments bank. For investors, the combined value of all its offerings makes them bet on Paytm. It already has the backing of the SoftBank Group and Alibaba, besides marquee investors such as SAIF Partners, MediaTek and Ratan Tata.

Last month something strange happened, Which I think you should read carefully.

I downloaded Callhealth app and booked few tests, they had online payment facility but i choose to pay them Cash.
Now at the time of payment, I paid through Card on delivery at my doorsteps, So they sent me a Confirmation message through their official SMS-ID.

Now to my surprise i see a message from PayTM (Pop-UP), Suggesting me that i can do payment to Callhealth using their app and get cashbacks up to Rs 100. Well, if you understand, The app is scanning the SMS inbox?

That is the reason, I choose to deny permission manually everytime i finish using them.

I'm no longer trusting this company. The owner is an big fraud, who is shielding his brother who was caught red-handed on a Cobrapost sting!

As for scanning the inbox, i believe all apps are doing that and Google is putting a stop to it.

Secondly the T&C of this call health site are to blame, not Paytm. They are themselves sharing the contact data...

^^ what about too many controversies at PayTm?

Shady character called Vijay shekar sharma & his brother not booked?

For a 10 lakh crime they called CBI and what now? https://indianexpress.com/article/delhi/delhi-paytm-fraud-case-cbi-5050998/

Can't book your own brother.. cuz you'll come out?

Actually, Paytm has its share of issues. However, most issues are because of human error like giving an OTP or not checking things properly. Its the equivalent of replying to an email with forged sender ID - still happening today.

As for the sting, dunno. Even recently bitcoin blogs would pass off paid content as their own for $$$
