As was being speculated for some time, Amazon today launched its India operations with Junglee.com. The platform, which Amazon says is still in beta, offers more than 1.2 crore products from over 14,000 brands and hundreds of retailers. Amazon lists Homeshop18, UniverCell, Hidesign, Gitanjali, The Bombay Store, Fabindia, Bata India Limited, Dabur Uveda, Microsoft India Store, Reebok, and Amazon.com, as some of the biggest ones.

Some key facts about the portal as it exists now:
  • The selection on Junglee includes more than 90 lakh books, and 30 lakh products from more than 14,000 Indian and global brands. Junglee features more than 25 product categories, including mobile phones, cameras, toys & games, baby products, books, music, movies & TV, clothing, and jewellery.
  • Amazon Kindle is available
  • Unlike sites like flipkart.com, users cannot buy directly from Junglee.com. The website puts customers in touch with sellers by directing them to the sellers' websites, displaying their customer service phone numbers and providing their physical store locations to help customers buy the products directly from sellers.
  • Existing Amazon users can login using their Amazon credentials. Users can then review products and even ‘Like’ products as well as sellers.
  • Retailers can upload their product catalogs for free on Junglee.com using Amazon’s Product Ads program. At the moment, the service is free and advertisers can direct traffic to their sites if they have online presence or to their customer care number/store location without making any payment to Amazon.

Amazon had acquired Junglee Corp in 1998, then a Sunnyvale-based company that provided database technology to help shoppers find products on the Internet.

This comes in the backdrop of a goldrush in the Indian e-commerce market. The e-commerce market in India has more than doubled from a $ 4 bn in 2009 to nearly $ 10 bn in 2011. Nearly $ 350 mn has been poured into 40 Indian e-commerce startups till the end 2011 compared to $ 43 million in 11 companies in 2009.

Earlier, PTI had reported that the world largest Internet retailer Amazon will set up a facility in Hyderabad and employ over 3,000 people.

In this case, what is the role of Amazon? Will it perform in a similar capacity as ebay?

Some of the pricing is really good, but many have put up marked up prices.

A good move for the time being. Amazon.com was already providing shipping to India for a lot of items. This will allow them to grab customer's attention with the INR pricing and also provide a platform for the existing online retailers to advertise their products for free.

When they do arrive in India with their own supply-chain and warehouses etc. , they will already have an established userbase along with a lot of 3rd party vendors.

Damn! We need a more advanced automotive section there with better car accesories, better engine oils, imported car sealants, polishes and waxes ASAP!

At this moment, I don't see it that much exciting. Most of them are either referring to Amazon.com or other known retailers like Saholic, Vicky.in, etc. The pricing is not that great. I feel that Letsbuy is a right replacement to Amazon.com.

^Cant edit the previous post again!

btw most of the stuff will ship via amazon.com from US to India and it shows approx pricing of the stuff + shipping + customs for the things listed there!

I doubt they'll ship engine oils and other liquid stuff from US?!?

Neither are the prices of imported goods inclusive. You get to now the total cost only after entering the card details and just before checkout!

Just saw Creative gigaworks T20 for ~3.2K, and seller was Amazon US, At checkout also, it's showing 3.2K only.

I did not get it, where is custom duty and shipping charges on this item?

Amazon already got huge distribution warehouse in Mumbai. They do have openings for Mumbai location for managers who have exp in handling HUGE warehouses.

Ehh, may be 10 times bigger then Big Bazar super stores.

Hold on your horses until their warehouses are ready to rock.

Its Beta yet, so they're not fully set.

They're going to expand massively in India, so wait for a year or two before expecting an Amazon.com like service in India. I've got contacts in Amazon and they say the company is betting big in India over the next 5 years and expect a huge market there, riding on the already famous brand image they enjoy.

Amazon was all set to enter the Indian market but Retail FDI related issues put an end to those plans. They have now decided to work in a similar fashion to eBay by allowing sellers all across India to use Amazon (in this case, Junglee) to sell their products.
