Google Refocusing

Google has announced that they are discontinuing some of their products .

Closing Dates :-
  • Picnik - Browser Based Photo editing tool - April 19th
  • Google Sky Map -Open Sourced
  • Needlebase - Data Management Platform - June 1st ,2012.
  • Social Graph API - Similar to the Rival facebook Social Graph - April 20th,2012
  • Urchin - Google Analytics Written based on Urchin - March 31st,2012.
  • GMC - Replaced by Google Apps.

Apart From these there are other products that are also closing or Closed - Google Wave , Google Video, Slide products . Also they have announced closing Google Labs in July 2011.

MegaUpload Taken Down

The File sharing site is accused of having pirated content by the FBI. Seven employee of the company are charged and four are already under FBI custody. MegaUpload's is claiming that most of their traffic is legitimate. The message that the US government want to convey with this is that we don’t need SOPA or PIPA to get you sued. Anonymous Revenge

Anonymous , a hacking activists group have taken the arrest of Megaupload's employee's very seriously and attacked websites with Ddos attacks.

Russian news service RT claims this is the largest coordinated attack in Anonymous' history—over 5,600 DDoS zealots blasting at once.

Anonymous has released a statement after the attacks.

Dreamhost Hacked

They have detected Unauthorized activity in one of their Database so they are urging all their users to change their panel password. On the brighter side the Database does not contain Credit card info but on the other side it contains passwords to sites on which Dreamhost users have invested enormous amount of time.

International Blackout Day

Websites all over the world has participated in the Blackout Day by blacking out their home pages & giving information about SOPA and it effects. It worked like a charm. The blackout day is dated 18th January ,2012. Before blackout Total supporters are 80 & Opposing this bill are 31 . After the Blackout day these numbers changed dramatically 63 supporters & 122 Opposing the bill .

Some Statistics about the Anti-SOPA Movement -
  • Mozilla's Anti-SOPA message reached 40 Million people & generated 360,000 emails to congress.
  • Google collected 4.5 million anti-SOPA signatures.
  • There were 2.4 million tweets related to this topic .
  • Wikimedia foundation reached 162 Million people.
  • Mark Zuckerberg CEO of Facebook posted on this topic which theoretically reaches 500+ million people. He also tweeted about this - Tweet.
  • Some people took the protest the old school way & come out on to the roads in a peaceful rally .
  • More than 115,000 websites have been blacked out for the day.

OPEN - Online Protection & ENforcement of Digital Trade Act

This is a alternative to SOPA & PIPA proposed by the Critics of SOPA &PIPA.

Bill Provisions -
  • Doesn’t require service providers or search engines to remove websites, and therefore “the DNS System remains intact.â€
  • The definition of targeted sites has been “significantly narrowed†and includes only those “dedicated to infringing activity.â€
  • The International Trade Commission is tasked with investigating complaints, and it is typically “transparent, quick, and effective†and includes more protection for due process than SOPA or PIPA.

Google's New Strategy

Google has made it mandatory for every Gmail account to have a Google + account for new Registrations . This is a way of increasing the no of people in Google + which has not performed to their expectations. They are also dropping Google Labs which is a birthplace for new inventions . Also they are dropping many services and wanting their Devs to solely work on Google+ . Let's see how much good this will do.

Vevo On Facebook

Reportedly facebook are in talks with Vevo to host their content on facebook . Facebook users can directly access vevo from their timelines. Another major blow for Google which is dying to get their social platform Google + on track.
