[PN] Internet News RoundUp - 30/1/2012

There has been very low activity in internet for past two days . I can think of some reasons for this . Lets start at the bottom of the world map. Most of the Australians and tennis fans were busy watching the Australian open where Djoker beat Nadal which I am not allowed to talk much of . Next are the European countries where the people opposing the controversial bill ACTA took the roads to oppose the bill. And the lobbyists were busy buying officials in the EU . In US the Lobbyists were busy planning how to get SOPA/PIPA approved through the government and sue people. Since most of the file sharing sites are almost down the remaining people were searching for pirated content . In spite of all this some things happened here is a summary .

Dutch ISP refuse to Block thepiratebay

Two weeks ago court has ordered the two major ISPs Ziggo & XS4ALL to block access to piratebay . Both the ISPs appealed to the court that this process is killing right to freedom. Only 30% of Ziggo and 4.5% of XS4ALL are accessing piratebay .Also there is no proof that users are accessing the site for downloading pirated content. Blocking site may raise security concerns also it is a violation of Privacy . So the court ruled out their previous decision . The main Organization behind all this is BREIN - Dutch anti-piracy group. BREIN has requested both the ISP to block piratebay. Both the ISPs again came out together by they will only take such action only on court orders.

Censorship In search engines

At a non-Public meeting hosted by the Uk Department of Culture,Media and Sport. Copyright holders have given a list of demands to all the major search engines. The main demands being

• Assign lower rankings to sites that repeatedly make available unlicensed content in breach of copyright

• Prioritize websites that obtain certification as a licensed site under a recognised scheme

• Stop indexing websites that are subject to court orders while establishing suitable procedures to de-index substantially infringing sites

They also proposed that results should be prioritized for certain keywords like 'mp3' ,'flac','rip','listen',stream...etc . The searc engines did not like the demands and are going to submit their own proposal at their next meet.

ACTA

Most of the EU has been on this for the past few days. People have been most vocal on this topic . They are also actively participating in Anti-ACTA movements. In poland the Parliament members identified themselves with Guy Fawkes masks to show their support towards Anti-ACTA movement. There have been massive protests also in Czech Republic,Belgium, Paris , Lyon , Bordeaux. Smaller protests have been organised in London, Dublin.

You will never see this in US media.
