Portable hdd = 2.5" hard disk without an external power adapter.
External hdd = 3.5" and uses an external power adapter.

While buying a portable hdd, get Seagate or WD as they have good reliability and a 3 years warranty period, avoid dell and transcend.
Buffalo seems to offer the best vfm package at 1tb (last deal i saw was @3.8k) as well as 3yrs warranty.

The only problem with Buffalo is that they dont have service center in Mumbai... :(.

Thank you all for providing me such a good suggestion regarding best and the worst HDD's in current time.
Thanks @aman.pitbull , @Crazy_Eddy , @benryu , @prateekS. I really apologize to other two members. I couldn't tags your name because of limit.

I would recommend the seagate backup plus. the goflex is a older model and read that a lot of these drives crash. Myself experienced a crash.

Guys kindly help in choosing either of the two:

http://www.flipkart.com/wd-my-passp...-disk/p/itmdbefzmqcgzzgh?pid=ACCDBEF57FVN4CFT for Rs 4700
OR
http://www.flipkart.com/seagate-bac...5TWC&ref=4ffde2ac-d4d1-4936-b068-ea7635c41cdd for Rs 4630

Really confused. Have been using Seagate since a long time (along with 3-4 RMA's so prettly familiar with the procedure). No WD experience till date. Will be buying later tonight or tomorrow morning.

Thanks

P.S. Sorry for hijacking the thread OP but had a very similar query therefore jumped in.
