I have a 500gb faulty hdd. It randomly fails on me. It would boot just fine but after some usage. It dies, starts giving i/o errors. I tried running intonation my Friends machine too.same result.

Now, gave it for rma but Seagate gave me same hdd back saying "no faults / checked "

What should i do now?

7200.11 500gb

--- Updated Post - Automerged ---

My drive pass all test long and short no error in seatools....

I told rma lady try to replace it..... Idiot wrote bad sector on jobsheet

LOL.

I am having almost same issue with a 320 gigs Seagate drive.

It gives some I/O error sometime - and sometime works just fine.

I haven't yet tested with any tool though - it started from last Sunday only.

Bro, which mobo are you using? Try updating the BIOS. There are changes its an issue with the Mobo....

I had a similar issue with SATA HDD on Intel 865GBF mobo.

Tested with Seatools and it passed the SMART test. But Windows doesn't boot with this 500giger plugged in, it just hangs:| so clearly smart data is unreliable.

With Ubuntu Linux -- tried to do a full format. I think was able to fully format the hdd but failed in creating new partitions. the process failed and I had the following scary errors in logs

Code:
 ata4.01: status: { DRDY }
 ata4: soft resetting link
 ata4.01: configured for UDMA/133
ata4.01: device reported invalid CHS sector 0
 ata4: EH complete
 ata4.01: limiting speed to UDMA/100:PIO4
 ata4.01: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen
 ata4.01: failed command: READ DMA
 ata4.01: cmd c8/00:08:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/f0 tag 0 dma 4096 in 9

Now, then I tried after an hour or so. the formatting-recreating partition process is worked flawlessly. now even window boots fine but.....

I tried transferring some data again & now I hear click-of-death sounds:| so the gist is, the hdd is sometimes faulty but sometimes works fine.
Its all random:mad:

Its not a mobo issue, I am sure because
a) My Other hdd works fine
b) I tested this 500giger into friends PC. Same behavior

Btw, my mobo is Gigabyte g32m-s2l

Have you tried wiping the MBR yet, but from the *clicking* sound, there seems to be some internal mechanical error.

Else you can try my method mentioned in the 3rd post

Drop from height, then it will give SMART error > send it again for RMA :eek:hyeah:

can u elaborate regarding the technique ....

I have got 2 160 GB seagate HDD's which loose their warranty in Feb 2012. working fine but sometimes make "click click" sound and fail to boot. SMART reports OK, Seatools reports OK...

- Pick your HDD.
- Stand straight on a bed/chair
- Raise your hand
- Release the HDD

Hopefully the HDD will develop some fault, and if you are lucky, you might even get a SMART error too :p

Power supply can be culprit , Had those click of death sounds with old PSU 350W local, changed SMPS .. till now heard none..

won't the HDD incur some of physical damage if dropped straight on the floor ...which inturn will be visible to service centre guys...??
