Not for gaming.

I was almost fixed on getting an X2 4200+ with A8N-SLi Premium. But a phone
call spoiled it all. SMC quoted 20k for 3800+ and 28k for 4200+. Since this isn't
going to be a gaming rig, no point in spending that much I think. AMD pricing
s*cks bad.

I know Pentium Ds have been thrashed harshly all over the net. X2s have
defeated them on all corners. But they're priced just right. Delta quotes
12.5k for the D820. It's the 830 that got me interested, though.

I would like to know what you people think about my purchase-list.

Intel Pentium D 830 - Price?
Intel D955XBK board - Price?
or, ASUS P5WD2 Premium - 14200 + 4% (Prime ABGB quote)
with, DDR2-667 1x1GB - Which make, price?

If it weren't the sicko gamers paying weirdo premium for the X2s, I would never
had to put Intel on my list. Fsck you, gamers! :eek:hyeah:

The problem with Intel dual-cores is the rates of the MOBO. If u get the 3800+ and the A8N-SLI Premium, u will only be spending abt. 2.5K more for a far better proccy and MOBO. The Pentium D's do cost around 12~14K. And the ASUS MOBO costs abt. 14K here at Delta.

^^ i agree with freaky, a good mobo with intel dual cores goes in the 26-28k price range. I'd opt for 20k for the 3800+ and a a8n-e which should come to around 26k. A better combo since the oc'ing options are present as well.

i wil also suggest u to go with X2 with premium ..... total cost will be less considering cost of mobo and DDR2 ...... and see the reviews u will never ask about intel DC :)

Right! And, I already have Kingston 2x512MB DDR400 with me, so I won't have
to buy RAM in case of X2. I got into thinking of Intel only because that guy
over the phone almost burnt me with the price flames.

Now that I'm a bit cool now, X2 does look sweet again. But the 4200+ isn't
worth 8k extra, or is it? Is the Premium necessary, considering I won't ever
touch the second X16 PCIe slot? A8N-E (with the new fan) should suffice, I
presume? Premium doesn't look that attractive with its heatsink now since the
release of A8N32. If I get Premium, I would still be thinking about spending a
lot and not getting the best available out there. Firewire and the second Gb
NIC are the only important things the A8N-E is missing anyway!

My only grief is that X2 3800+ doesn't perform very good in non-multithreaded
applications. And, I don't want to overclock the hell out of it.

And, where is goldenfrag? I've noticed he/she is running D820. I would definitely
like to have a word from you.

Id say go for a AMD X2 3800+ and a A8n-e.

If you must go for Pentium D, then go for what you said.

Im having no problems with my Pentium D 820. :).

^^Well His siggy shows he's using some exotic cooling, not many people buy this kinda stuff, i wonder if it overclocks as well as AMD on stock cooling.

What abt the additional cost of DDR2 that he has to incur ? That provided, X2 is the best. He already has 2 Kingston 512's.

Its not really Exotic Cooling.

Its just a XP-90. 30 Dollars :|.

Imma getting a better cooler later :eek:hyeah:

Btw.. The Max my CPu has done is 4.2 Ghz. Though at very high Load temps..

I keep it at 3.6 as it gives the best performance to temperature ratio.. if ya get what i mean :p...

Ok people! Got my rig approved with my father. :eek:hyeah:
Which one is better:

(1) AMD X2 3800+, ASUS A8N SLi Premium, nVIDIA 6600 (not a gamer)
(2) AMD X2 4200+, ASUS A8N-E, nVIDIA 6200TC / non-TC

I can only get nVIDIA cards, because ATI has no drivers for Solaris x86.

@goldenfrag, let me know whenever you want to 'upgrade' your cooler. ;)

I'd say get the 3800+ rig. IMO, thats 8K diverted for a good board and a decent graphics card regardless of you being a gamer! BTW I agree you wouldnt be making much use of the 2nd PCI-E gfx slot on the A8N-SLI Premium. So perhaps you'd be better off investing in a DFI nF4 Ultra-D instead - it has a FireWire port & two GB NIC ports as well.

Paying 8K more for the 4200+ for just a 200Mhz higher clock speed doesnt make sense! Get the 3800+ and OC it to 4200+ speeds with ease (a 200Mhz bump in speeds is definately not "overclocking the hell out of it".

P.S: From what I heard, the 4200+ was the only model officially introduced in India by AMD, but the 3800+ is the one most of the enthusiasts look for. Also the 4200+ costs around 26.5K here in Chennai. So 28K would imply SMC taking a healthy profit :p

Thanks for your suggestions, Eddy! Like I said before, AMD pricing s*cks here.
Yankees can get a 4200+ and still save some dollars for the price we're paying
for a 3800+ here.

I don't need SLi, but the second Gb NIC and Firewire are nice. DFI is good, but
they don't like Value RAMs, and mine is KVR. Plus, I need rock solid stability, but
not at the cost of peace of mind. And, here ASUS scores better, IMHO.

Still, if Freaky 'allows' me a piece of his DFI cake, I may give it a serious reconsideration.

If only I could get a 4400+ for the price S~!@#$M%^&*C is asking for 4200+.

Well some updates coming up in the DFI thread. I managed to pull out the pricing data from the Excel sheet that Vinod mailed.. check it out ;)

config'a good, though DDR2 667 is hard to come by (had a s***storm when I went to get mine)....
Anyways go corsair since ur rig is good....go for an Asus/MSI 955 instead of intel...

Oh and couple this with a 6600GT at least....and its not for gaming....you'd need a 7800GT at least for that ;)
