Storage Solutions Suggest a reliable 1TB portable hard drive under 4k

Budget : under 4k

Usage : PS3: FAT 32 formatted, to run games via USB port. PC : Photos and movie backups.

Requirements: Reliable, good A.S.S, shock proof (if possible)

I checked a few sites and found these:

which one is better suited for my requirements?
 
I would suggest the WD Passport Ultra. AFAIK, all are more or less similar on the reliability front, but since it is a premium product, expect it to be better. YMMV though.

Transcend RMA is crap. So big minus. Plus, it aint rugged, thats Lacie or AData. Finally, they use HDDs from WD or Seagate, so makes sense to stick to the makers :p

I am also looking to buy a rugged HDD. Here is some of my research:
1) TRANSCEND 25H3P / 25M3
Pros:
  • Feeling confident when watched thier drop test videos.
  • Reasonably priced at around Rs.4.3k online
Cons:
  • Heard about poor TRANSCEND RMA. Experienced users kindly throw some light on TRANSCEND after sales service in india.
1) ADATA HD650 / HD710
Pros:
  • _____________________Left it for you guys to fill :)
Cons:
  • High price as compared to TRANSCEND durable drives.
  • 1st time brand for me, so nill experience with ADATA after sales service yet.
So help me decide in getting a reasonable rugged, durable, portable HDD. Thanks!!
 
The reviews state that Seagate HDDs have better USB3.0 speeds (almost double) than WD. The passport goes to about 60MB/s whereas Backup Plus goes to about 115MB/s.
 
In our case, WD was quicker than Seagate. However, this was a backup where we needed to copy small random files & several folders.

Thanks for the info. I looked at a review at Tech2 & customer reviews at Amazon.in for both the drives. Actually, I'm looking to buy one myself. The WD one has a better form-factor, is more compact and better looks. But the speed was what put me off.

There aren't many. One from Transcend, that's all. I think you should go for a normal one. It shouldn't be a problem under normal use.
 
I have lost once WD Portable HDD due to crash & lost all my precious data. So dont want to repeat the mistake again thats why looking for a rugged HDD.
I have selected TRANSCEND 25H3P / 25M3 & ADATA HD650 / HD710, now looking for the best advice from my fellow TEians. My trust from TRANSCEND after sales service is getting off as per reviews. Again its my request to members using TRANSCEND products kindly share your RMA experience if you had any. Thanks!!

AFAIK rugged drives only protect against drops, water or dust. It doesnt guarantee that it would never crash.

Regarding crashes, while there is no guarantee, but newer HDDs should crash less than the HDDs manufactured after the Thailand floods.

Agree with you guys that HDD still crashes but i want precautions then to be cure. I have contacted SNAPDEAL customer care bout TRANSCEND customer service centre & got thier reply, it is operated by ACCEL FRONTLINE SERVICES LTD. I tried to contact their Chandigargh, Amritsar CSC but none of them is picking up the phone. Members! Kindly confirm does ACCEL FRONTLINE SERVICES LTD is still covering TRANSCEND warranty claims or not. What about ADATA RMA experience?
 
Are you really going to drop it from your balcony or terrace or put it under some volvo wheels?:doctor:

Go for WD Passport or Ultra with eyes closed or even for a seagate if you want.

What matters is how much safe is our data and for your rugged query, you have to handle your items cautiously esp. rams and hdds.

I dont think of 100 TEins here even 8 might have dropped their harddrives ever (excluding pendrives). So even though you get a bullet proof drive you just simply cant go on bombing it anywhere and expect your data is very safe.:blackeye:

Better keep your harddrive in a bank locker but by the time you reach there you have to prevent it from any accident on the way though.:mask:

Thanks for your reply mate ;) Now here is the approximate conclusion, SUPERTRON India only honors memory or pen drives warranty while ACCEL FRONTLINE SERVICES LTD doesn`t deals with TRANSCEND anymore. So now who is handling TRANSCEND HDDs warranty? I have sent an email to TRANSCEND customer care, lets wait for thier response.
