The only time you get to fire the Golden Machine Gun is during Setup, where it can fire through the grates, and the Humiliation period, which follows right after Setup because you automatically win the round.

Also if both teams have the Golden Machine Gun, the game quits for every single person playing TF2 around the globe and everyone who owned the Golden Machine Gun from that game is VAC banned.
