I would have really liked it if they had taken the opportunity to tell some one else's tale. There are a number of survivors out there and would've enjoyed seeing this post-apocalyptic world from someone else's point of view. They could've had the previous characters popping up here and there.
A huge reason I want this to be done is - the first game was not only great as a game but also as a story and I don't want them to mess with it. A common plot in continuations of characters growing up in movies or games is they rebel at the start and near the end make amends which is very predictable.
