CPU/Mobo Upgrading PC, suggest core components

I'm sick and tired of my old pentium4 and now I can't use this pc anymore. I'm getting 2.5k for it and with a little pocket money I can get this UPS.

APC BACK-UPS ES 650VA 230V INDIA

I want a future proof system. My requirements are DDR3 , AM3 ( phenom II x2 550 will be the processor) , a decent graphic card to play games on a 17" CRT.
The total budget is 25k. I'm buying from Lynx india shop if that helps.

I want only the CPU, I got the monitor, speakers, mouse and keyboard.

tthe system was so noisy I used to wear earphones and sit in front of my p4
 
I don't have a decent graphic card , case , PSU anything. It needs to be build from scratch. Every thing new except the monitor. Its more like replacing than upgrading.
 
Sell the monitor as well (Incase you are still stuck up with it). It will still fetch you something than nothing in future. Go for the TFT.

RAM - Corsair XMS3 2Gb DDR3 (1333 Mhz) or Make it 2+2,If you can stretch @ 3k (each stick)

HDD - WD 500 GB Sata II [32 Mb Buffer) @ 2.7k

Optical Drive - LG DVD RW with Lightscribe @ 1.2k

Good config.... As AM3 platform based is a bit future proof and a good GPU so it can handle games even when you move to a LCD.... But can we trust the Gigabyte460w to run a 9800GT:S Better go for CX400 by spending .9k more:clap::clap:

If you want AM3+DDR3 and don't want to compromise on anything big, you're gonna end up spending a bit more. Good, cheap mobos are out there but not available in India.

How about you spend a bit more and get a really nice PSU, like a VX450 or something, and go w/o a GPU for a while ?(Till you collect for one) However, i don't know how appealing that would sound to you. :p

i thnk e7400 wtih g31 wud fit the bill perfectly and also probably save hime some cash. moreover there isn't a lot of performance diff b/w x2 550 and e7400. whatcha guyz say?

At stock speed, X2 550 has upper hand to E7400. If you can unlock it to quad, it is a X4 955 which is beaten only by the i7. And there is a hefty chance to unlock, specially the 0922 batch succeeded 100% so far.

And regarding OC ability, I've seen people taking E7400 to 3.7GHz on a Thor's Hammer or 3.8GHz with other after market cooler where as I myself took my X2 550 to 3.675 with the stock tiny HSF and OCCT proved it stable. Max OCCT temp was 47 degree Celcius. :D Overclocking is very easy as X2 550 is Black edition i.e. has unlocked multiplier. So I think X2 550 is better than E7400 and is worth every paisa. Considering the motherboard prices, TA790GX is far far better than the Gigabyte G31 . And for those who can't get this due to their budget are advised to get a Biostar 780G based mobo approx 3-3.5k max.
