Quick question

Does this encrypt all the data on the drive like the MyBook Essentials? The USB to SATA controller in the MyBook Essential drives have hardware encryption built-in (Found this out the hard way). So in the event the controller goes kaput, you've lost all your data.

Afaik, no. You are asking if something goes wrong,, can you get back data from hdd? Right?
You can connect the hdd to pc internally and you would be able to recover data.

The disk has 8 partitions
Partition 1 & 2 = /dev/md0 raid 1 partition
Partition 3 = Swap
Partition 4 = all the data
Partition 5 & 6 = Kernel, and backup
Partition 7 & 8 = barebox configuration

No, that's the problem with these damn things. If the controller in the enclosure goes bad and you try connecting it directly to a PC, you won't be able see any data. Your computer won't recognize the partition as it's encrypted because of the the hardware encryption bridge installed on the SATA to USB controller that's in the enclosure.

Not sure about the NAS version which is why I was asking. Lost a lot of data thanks to one these MyBook external drives when the controller fried.

Nope that's not the case with nas drives.
In case controller goes kaput, you can attach drive to pc and recover your data.

Can someone confirm this?

Does it have one hard disk of 4 TB or 2 hard disks of 2 TB each so that RAID 1 can be configured. As far i can see in specs, it does not have any redundancy but you partition info shows RAID1 partition. Just trying to make an informed decision

As you can see from the photo of the drives provided here, This is SINGLE disk of 4TB, here is more info if you need

Hi chetansha,

There is no hardware encryption on the WD My Cloud, but you can just set user permissions through it's dashboard.
