CPU/Mobo WTB: Gigabyte GA-X79-UP4, Intel i7-4930K, (Corsair/GSKILL) 8x8GB DDR3

Guys,

Any ideas where I can get the best deal for subject combo? I am open for Online transaction as well. Do you have any other better recommendation? Please bear in mind I need them for home virtualization lab, either Xen or VMWare.

Thanks.

There's a 6 core Xeon E5 2620 V2 (V2 = ivy bridge; v1 = sandy bridge) thats cheaper (but also clocked lower, and will have a lower TDP) : http://www.theitdepot.com/details-Intel Xeon E5 2620 V2 2.10 GHz Processor_C30P19908.html . A Xeon's mem controller would be a better option considering you're planning to load all the memory banks. You should preferably pair it with a server chipset rather than the consumer X79. Another bonus with a 2xxx proc is you could shift to a dual socket board and throw in another 2xxx proc.

There are 2 Asus boards on the ITDepot site itself. Single socket : http://www.theitdepot.com/details-Asus+Z9PA-U8+256GB+DDR3+Intel+Motherboard_C13P19839.html. Dual socket (but has only 4 RAM sockets per processor) : http://www.theitdepot.com/details-Asus+Z9PA-D8+256GB+DDR3+Intel+Motherboard_C13P19840.html

You could look around at some Supermicro boards too from distris like Boston : http://www.supermicro.com/wheretobuy/asia.cfm?rgn=135

ServeTheHome has some nice reviews on server motherboards : http://www.servethehome.com/category/server-parts/motherboards/. A lot of Supermicro boards covered, and the dual-socket Asus board mentioned above.

Do take note that most of these server motherboards are extended ATX (except the 2 Asus boards mentioned on top which are ATX), so make sure your chassis can accommodate them.

N00b question : Why do people spend so much on servers for virtualization, when they could get multiple consumer systems and run each OS independently?

Thanks again Eddy! Well let me answer you, I am a Solution Architect, I try various Cloud related solutions and the solutions demands continous variation of CPU/RAM usage. Consider one product needs 16GB of RAM individually, once I tried that I may need 32GB for another product, or I may needs 8GB for 8 different products working together. Also consider the cost of router, with virtualization everything is virtual, so there is no cable. Combinations are limitless. I am starting off with 64GB but will upgrade to 128GB in future.

Welcome to the enterprise cloud world! ;)

@Crazy_Eddy , I got the Z9P8 motherboard and Xeon E5 2620. Can you please suggest which RAM I should go for? I thought RAM would be easy, but looks like it's not. I was planning to go with Corsair Select 8 GB stick, but I think I will get stuck with 32GB RAM with one CPU.

Following are my options:

Total Slots : 8 (4-channel per CPU, 4 DIMM per CPU)
Capacity : Maximum up to 256GB RDIMM
Memory Type :
DDR3 1866/1600/1333/1066 RDIMM*1
DDR3 1866/1600/1333/1066 UDIMM*1
DDR3 1866/1600/1333/1066 LRDIMM*1
Memory Size :
32GB, 16GB, 8GB, 4GB, 2GB RDIMM
8GB, 4GB, 2GB UDIMM
32GB, 16GB, 8GB LRDIMM

I think I will have to go with RDIMM/LRDIMM. Corsair probably goes to UDIMM socket.

Please advise. Thanks in advance.[DOUBLEPOST=1401081277][/DOUBLEPOST]Also please advice model for 320GB SSD, it's going to be heavy data intensive.

@Crazy_Eddy, Thanks a lot! Got 16GB RDIMMS at an awesome price of 10.8k from a friend, also got Samsung Pro 840 at 13k from the same friend. Next I was considering if I can continue with my old Corsair 450vx or I should buy a 650 Corsair?

Additionally, I was wondering if my Zebronics Cube can take care of this ATX? (12"x10"). Probably not, any suggestion for compact case?

If your VX is running fine, then it should do for 1 CPU (assuming you aren't throwing in a power hungry GPU). If you get a 2nd CPU then it might be wise to upgrade.

I think the Cube is mATX only. Your motherboard would definitely need a roomy case. Not familiar with the cabinet scene, sorry :)

ok, @Crazy_Eddy, Got Seasonic S12II 620W for 5502/-, thanks to Snapdeal.com, I hope it runs fine. Now the last lap, CPU cooler? I have Sunbeamtech Core-Contact Freezer CPU Cooler which is still with me. Will this suffice?
