Both Google and Yahoo are working overtime to extend their services to mobile devices and Yahoo is preparing to release a special cell phone to access those services, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

According to the Journal, Yahoo will sell the phone through its partnership with SBC, which is a co-owner of Cingular. The goal of the phone will be to wirelessly link users to a wide variety of services such as music and e-mail that exist as part of their Yahoo accounts, the publication said.

"This idea of taking essential Yahoo services that we offer on PCs today and extending them to other devices including mobile phones is a huge priority for the company," the Journal quoted a Yahoo spokeswoman as saying.

Google also has been actively moving into the realm of mobile devices and is expected on Monday to make its Google satellite map service available on some Java-enabled mobile devices, the Wall Street Journal reported.

There have long been a relative handful of sites designed to work on mobile devices and the search companies have offered rudimentary search capabilities via mobile devices, typically by submitting search queries using text messaging.
