PC Peripherals How long can we run ups with dying battery?

I'm guessing the UPS battey is finally close to quitting since i bought it in 2017 i think. The UPS just shows a red light after self test. I switched off the socket it was connected to and it gave power. Not sure how long it will last. I have a home ups so no worries about power failure. The UPS was just so that computer and devices don't restart.

The shops in my area are closed. Even the roads are barricaded because some people in my area got covid and were taken by ambulance to hospital. So till August, i doubt i can buy a battery for this. Will it work like this?
I disabled the alarm noise so no beeps to irritate me.

It will work albeit with zero or extreme low backup aka use as an extension. Once things are normal you can buy batteries. But if deliveries are allowed in your zone you ca buy online from amazon etc. or even contact UPS cos.

For the less then 50ms change over time , your old battery should work. But at some point it will fail completely, may be before the year.
Which ups is that, atleast on some apc models you can disable the self test, which unnecessarly drains the battery each time you switch it On.

It's a very old apc ups model - Back UPS ES650.

I had installed some open-source apc app my ubuntu system. I wonder if it's still installed.

Guys i need to buy a ups for my pc with ancient Corsair cx400. Dell 22 ultra sharp. I need like 1-2 minutes of backup till the building Genset kicks in. The cx400 is on it's last legs and will be replaced with all equivalent Corsair or seasonic quality level part. Ditto the LCD. I don't see a requirement of more than 650-800va.

What I'm confused about is they're still selling only square wave computer UPSs. Only home UPSs come in sine wave.

Will these squares work fine with high-end PSUs or is the active PSU thing no longer an issue? And what's the best UPS?

Apc ups even the basic ones use a modified sinewave, basically a square wave modifed to mimic a sine wave, for the brief period yours will on back up, it shouldnt be a issue. Cheapest apc with pure sine wave ups cost well over 14k.

If the battery is dead, its not going to be of any use. I would remove it instead.

As for the battery replacment, look up online. I am pretty sure things have started unlocking.

Even the APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G costing over 18k says "Stepped approximation to a sinewave". I think only their smart-ups line are sine wave. Su-kam was the only ups brand which had pure sine wave. More than the psu, i'm worried about the hard drives, because they are the easiest to die with bad power.

A close friend works as a service engineer in microtek here. he's supplied over a dozen home inverters and batteries to my entire extended family. at discount/DP. So if there's a decent microtek ups comparable or better than APC i would like to stick to that brand. Any suggestions?

Not sure which one he can supply, i will ask tomorrow. This is online: https://www.amazon.in/microtek-tuff-power-pro-650va/dp/B076N3TMR6

@Julian , those listings are over priced due to shipping. APC price is bonkers as usual.

In shop before this pandemic, we could buy it for 750 rupees or 700 after giving old battery to dealer. These are scooter batteries and don't cost more than 800. Maybe now it may cost 850 but if we go to the shop we can get cash back for old battery.

I'm not sure about Bombay but i heard new bby is starting to unlock?

My friend can get me this one for about 2.2k. The 1Kva with 2 batteries will be 4.5k

Apc ups prices online is ridiculous, its cheaper in offline stores atleast in bangalore, where they are made.
No idea about microtek but specs say it has a transfer time of 4 to 8ms which should be good, negative reviews are all to do with its voltage regulation.
I find the apc smart ups to be the best, interms of transfer time 2 to 4ms and voltage regulation in battery is very close to 230v, where as apc BR,ES series have 8ms transfer time and voltage varies from 160v to 200v depensing on the load, its the same case with other cheaper ups from other brands.

Which brand/model gives the cleanest output while on mains?
When its running on Mains, apc ups for example wont do any voltage regulation if the input voltage is within 200 to 253v. Only if it goes above those two threshold will it do voltage regulation.
There is no data on other companies, you may find it in their manuals.
But generally on mains the cleanest output will be a Online ups. Alternately get a servo stabilizer for the entire house and eliminate all other stabilizers.

Which UPS have you decided to get then @Julian ? I need a cheap one so that my monitor,pc and router don't shut off during the 1 minute time period when the light goes out and the guard turns on the generator so i don't think i would need like a good branded one like APC. Microtek and Zebronics seem to be a good option on amazon. @adder what do you also suggest adder?

Haven't decided yet. The microtek one doesn't seem very good even though my friend is supplying it. Vguard has slightly better reviews but not convincing enough without someone recommending it out of personal experience. I also don't want to spend over 10k for one of the 'better' models. Ditto for an online UPS, which is like 15k+. My previous experiment with a home ups (sine wave) +60Ah battery was a better option. But it takes up space. I had mounted the ups inside a Nilkamal stool above the feet, and kept the battery on top. I just hope my HDDs don't die by the time I'm done deciding :-/

Reviews of this microtek online ups say the fan noise is unbearable.

I never read reviews on amazon with a blind eye cause most of the time it's just either the person being retarded and saying "fake, i want muney back" or using the said device in a wrong way :p.
This kinda looks good though.

Good. At least one of us isn't waiting till the end of the world to make a damn decision

Do let us know how it is. Also, what's your psu and other loads on the ups?

PSU is an Antec 500 watt something something psu, but i don't think my system will pull that much power, other devices i will be connecting is the wifi router and the monitor.

I trust flipkart reviews even less than Amazon, but all the other UPSs there are rated higher than the luminous. What made you decide on this one?

I look at the number of ratings more than the rating given, sure there were higher rated ones but they weren't reviewed by many and the only other PSU i saw which was as popularly rated as this one was the APC which was 1k costlier than others and i just simply needed a cheap reliable power supply which could switch back and forth when the light would go out, come back via generator and then return back to the main power. If my apartment had no generator believe me i would have went hunting online looking at every review and spec sheet seeing what does what, but my need this time was simple so i looked at what costed right, had good service and warranty period and bought it.
