Haven't come across any major issues when using the CPU.Not sure about the onboard graphics card. Also since you would be using a dedicated GPU, how does it matter ? As far as CPU performance goes, it is very very strong.
Overclocking non K CPUs with special BIOS has it's fair share of disadvantages. You should mention that too. Although overclocking Skylake non K CPUs is possible, it comes with caveats.
GTX 970 has more CUDA cores compared to GTX 1060. Technically speaking, the 1060 is a successor to the 960 and not 970. 1070 would be the successor of the 970. CUDA cores matter in professional apps. I would stick with 970 if work is priority.
I wouldn't say that for a Motherboard though. CPU and to some extent RAM is fine. I personally would prefer purchasing a Motherboard locally.
As for the original question, Asus and Gigabyte both make good quality boards. Choose whichever you prefer/ like more.
Couldn't agree more. If you want to use a Universal Block then better get VRM heatsinks seperately and then stick em up with thermal pad and have a high cfm fan blowing air over them all the time if you want to see the card alive for a longer period of time.
Following in the footsteps of it's older siblings, Maximus VI Extreme & Maximus VI Formula, the Gene is the juniour member of the Asus Z87 ROG family.
Don't let the mATX form factor fool you, this little guy too has some serious fire power
