TIM applying method mostly depends on the TIM itself. Thin TIMs can be best applied with "Dot" method. But Thick pasts like OCZ freeze and even MX2 (though not so think) are better spread on both the CPU and HSF.

@OP: Try to get MX2. It's good, I'm using it for the last 2 years. It's also easy to apply, unlike OCZ Freeze. BTW: Which PSU do you have? which cabinet, how many intake and exhaust fans?

no, i was trying to convey that many chips need about 1.9v to reach 6k+ and yours was no exception, or at least the chip will need that much voltage without tweaking other settings yeah they are damn expensive. So how much yours shows?
