Apple M1 5nm chip launched for macbook air and pro 13 inch

Even if these are too good, these are still restricted to Mac laptops. Not a competition for pc laptops since Apple won't sell their chips to 3rd party laptop vendors like Dell etc. Intel and amd chip prices won't come down in near future that's for sure. Maybe AMD will bump up their integrated graphics. Intel as usual will rely on bumping up speeds and their marketing power to push more Intel laptops.

I'm very curious to see the performance of windows virtualized on this M1 chip. If we see performance anywhere close to a vanilla 10th gen i7 under virtualization, I will be beyond impressed.

Looking at the geekbench stats posted earlier, Apple seems to have purposely held back on how far they could have taken the chip so as to not outdo the 16" MacBook & iMac and keep them relevant. Don't think its going to be that straightforward of a comparison between processors anymore going forward as the architectures, api's and core capabilities are becoming quite diverse. Are brute power & IPC comparisons going to be that relevant?

Don't think i'll be a beta tester this gen no matter how good these chips are. 2nd Gen lineup will be good to look at as by then, kinks will be worked out and developer ecosystem will have stabilized. Also will probably have the option of a touchscreen on a MacBook. If these benchmark numbers are to be believed and they translate into similar real world performance, AMD & especially Intel are in some trouble. Don't see Apple loosing the lead till at least 2024ish assuming intel moves quickly on 3nm. Also someone was earlier hung up on the 6x claims. I think what apple meant in the slide was performance/watt, not performance?. And it is 6x when compared to that 45W i9.

I actually am hoping they have under promised in the keynote. If they are even remotely successful, I am sure we will see many new and existing companies start iterating on ARM based processors & SOC's . We need to see the Intel/AMD & Nvidia/AMD duopoly end.

who makes a 2-3 minute video ?
are the performance sustainable over a prolonged period, once the thermal headroom is reached...
We are going to have to wait and see. For now all we have is this marketing mumbo jumbo -

Wow.

So much for touting Apple being privacy focused.
Apple seems to only care about privacy when it's not them wanting your data

so don't talk about affordability just coz you like to waste your money.
lulz. the reason why I prefer a macbook is because it lasts a LOT longer than usual garbage windows laptops. though they seem to be catching up now.

..... and then Apple drops the M1. xD

dear apple hater, suggest me one good windows laptop under 1 lakh that doesn't SUCK. something which is light and thin, has great battery, great speakers, great performance (for the average casual user), doesn't have much bugs in the software, AMAZING integration with iPhone/iPad/Airpods, GREAT display and great build quality. there maybe a few laptops which tick these marks barely, but the new macbooks just hits it out of the park AND imo is HIGH VALUE for MONEY at 84K. Only thing that bugs me is the display bezels. looks so 2017.
Kindly check out the reviews these M1 laptops are getting :)

and yeah the resale value of macbooks, you are aware of that right?

fyi, I had a macbook pro 2015 and sold it for nearly 60% of the purchase price after 5 freaking YEARS. if that was a windows laptop, i don't even want to think how much I'd have gotten. xD

I don't worship Apple as a company, i just love some of their recent products.

Haha you can say what you want. I won't bother to respond to fanbois... I am sure there are a lot of other dumb ones who will purchase generation old laptops and processors.. That doesn't make your or their choice the right one

What I don't understand is why are people like you and them on tech forums? You should be in fancy parties boasting about apple as if they are your company... Clearly you aren't bothered about technology...
You just want to talk about how expensive their laptops are... And how gullible the apple fanboys are... None of these belong to a tech forum

Also if you are actually concerned about spending money wisely.. You can check the ongoing sale on MacBooks in India and the US... Even the m1 chip is on sale of approx 10 to 15% which just launched... Apple no longer is the company that doesn't have sale... So if you found someone dumb enough to pay you 60% of 5 year old laptop... You should consider yourself lucky and not feel the laptop is worth it. Again none of this belongs on a tech forum... This should be part of negotiation or reseller forums... I don't know how someone can get excited that oh they own 5 year old tech... I have great tech wow..

Also by your logic if apple laptops are so great and windows laptops are garbage.. How come market share of MacBook is so abysmal? Surely by your logic people spending their money to buy windows laptops in overwhelming majority means windows laptops are much better

ahem ahem. why are you averting my question? suggest me a laptop.
not bothered about tech? hahaha. M1 is bringing such a huge leap to personal computing and you belittle it as if it's no big deal. and it's me who's not bothered about tech? oh my goodness.

"You just want to talk about how expensive their laptops are."
DUUDE, are you insane? o_O I just said how VFM their laptops are now, not how expensive it is.

oh great now you're comparing US and India prices xD xD blame the govt, not the company lool. so in that case it's stupid to buy any pc component in india because it's on sale in the US.

yes, I agree about that part a 5 year old laptop isn't completely worth at that price point. but mind you even in the us where tech is a lot cheaper and there are more options to choose from, macbooks still have great resale value. in the buyer's defense, he simply wanted a good display (mine was retina model) with good accurate colors for his photo editing and if he needs to get a new one he has to shell out at least 2x what he paid. the battery was in good condition too. tbh, I wouldn't pay that price if I was in his shoes.
you have no idea about resale value do you?

market share of macbook? you do realize that not everybody can afford a 1000$ laptop (90k here) right? compare the sale of macbooks to high end windows ultrabooks and then talk.
it's like comparing market share of maruti suzuki to a german automaker lol.

it is indeed a game changer!

Mac mini at 65k at another absolutely VFM product now. this is just amazing.

hot damn! unbelievable feat. look at that efficiency and performance.

correction... windows is garbage just like android is garbage.

I am not some YouTube celebrity haha! Actually I cancelled the previous and re ordered with 16G ram so now it shows 27nov-4dec but I am not in a hurry.
Yep

ios is garbage and so is mac os

Neither would shit.
It’s consumer niche market which Apple is targeting right now. Intel does server market much better and amd is in consoles plus ryzen is the chip to beat.

This thread looks like this .

Anyways the performance seems to be pretty good as per the reviews & this does look like a phenomenal upgrade for users who can use Mac OS in their workflows. The battery life is simply outstanding. I would be waiting for the next gen Apple chips though & more apps supporting these chips natively before jumping.

I think mac does have its appeal in some scenarios & it is indeed a very good & compelling product but you simply cannot discount windows laptops too. They are far more versatile & there is a reason majority are still using them. Specially if you want to game, you simply have no alternatives right now except to choose a windows laptop.

Very impressive figures. Game changer for sure. Excellent combo of above average performance and battery life.

For the 1st time in my life, I would consider upgrading to "thin" machines since there is no performance loss. Great job by Apple !

We’re curious to see how the M1 stacks against a potential 8-core Tiger Lake chip down the line, as well as AMD’s new Ryzen 5000 processors, which are also looking to take Intel’s CPU crown. For now, though, the M1 is looking to be the fastest mobile chip you can buy.

Finally, we reach the biggest potential drawback for the M1: Since the Apple M1 uses a completely new architecture (at least new for Macs), it can’t natively run apps designed for x86 chips. Instead, it has to emulate them. Apple’s built a tool to let users easily do this, called Rosetta 2, but running apps through Rosetta 2 means they’re going to take a performance hit.

Still, even the emulated scores are higher than any other Intel Mac on single-core, including the 2020 27-inch iMac with a Core i9 processor. As for the multi-core score, it’s still much higher than the 3,067 score of the Core i7 2020 MacBook Air.

Keep in mind that performance varies from program to program, however. When The Verge tested the x86 version of Adobe Creative Cloud on its MacBook Pro review unit, the publication came across a bug that consistently halved its export bitrate.

Again, this is a place where we're looking forward to seeing how the M1 fares against the newest Intel and AMD chips. Because the M1 isn’t going to be running at its best here, other chipmakers might be able to make up the current performance gap more easily in upcoming mobile chip releases.

One of the coolest new features of the M1 chip is that, because it uses the same processor architecture as the iPhone and iPad, it can now run apps designed for those devices natively. However, reviewers are skeptical of this feature’s current implementation.
The Verge called using iOS apps on Mac a “messy, weird experience,” in part because the apps that are available are “from developers that haven’t been updated to be aware of newer devices.” While Overcast, a podcast app, worked great for The Verge, HBO Max was stuck to a small window that couldn’t be resized and couldn’t play fullscreen videos.

The elephant in the room here across all experiences seems to be the lack of a touchscreen. We were hoping Apple would announce touchscreen Macs during its ‘One More Thing’ event earlier this month. But with no word on those yet, it’s hard for iOS apps on M1 to feel like more than an afterthought. There’s also the lack of support from big developers, who are probably waiting for these kinks, like no touchscreen support, to work themselves out.

Your own Dell Geekbench 5.2 scored 5,319.
Dell uses i7-1065G7 what is 12W, year old CPU.
Not so bad compared to M1 6,292.

Great piece of chip. Check MKBHD review, awesome battery life never heard in a PC so far. Plus now it can even run iOS apps, millions of app already!!! Looks like a bright future ahead..

I am PC and Android user inbtw, would always appreciate a great piece of hardware immaterial of where it comes from. Peace .
