Budget 71-90K 13 inch Laptop with good battery backup

If college asks for a windows laptop or software then the money will be wasted. So better wait till the requirements are known and buy it in UK.
Sorry, can you please elaborate, not able to understand.
Edit: Ok got it. Not sure if the college will be specific on Windows or Mac

Please don't let your daughter buy an used laptop from Craigslist/ similar in UK unless she is living with your family members there.
I'm 99% sure no college in UK will specify Windows/ Mac ( unless she's doing very specific engineering stuff)

@technofast

How about you drill down to the laptop you want her to get, check prices here and in UK both. If similar or cheaper in UK (most probable case), let her buy from there only. Brand new ofcourse.
Please don't let her get involved in local dealings and such, especially in a new country.

exactly.

go for a good windows ultrabook/ macbook air and it’ll be good for the next 5 years. avoid used products.

i think in uk a macbook would be more common than windows laptops among students. there shouldn’t be any problem w.r.t os. in malaysia where i do my course, iPads/ Macbooks are much more in number in my class compared to windows laptops.

Precisely...I took online classes in some medical schools in Germany and Czech Republic / Slovakia for 3-4 months...90 percent of the students were on ipad!!

Yes, definitely a basic laptop would do but my daughter is fixed on this laptop or Mac air. However, I did not find any Ultrabook for less than 70K to 80K
80% of the students in her class will have a Mac so i'd suggest just getting the Air. One good thing about Macs is that they tend to last so you shouldn't have any further issues. And there are no windows vs mac issues in terms of software compatiblity. The university will provide both versions.

80%:joycat::joycat: Can you provide the proof for these numbers. They clearly look made up.

Even windows might not have 80% worldwide market share, forget mac, I doubt it is even half of what you have just pulled out of thin air

Mobile and Desktop Operating Systems Market Share (hostingtribunal.com)

Laptop OS Market Share | T4

So, time to answer the questions from the intro.

Between Windows and Mac, Windows is the sure winner in terms of operating systems market share. However, programmers prefer to work on MacOS.

That said, when it comes to education, they all bow to Chrome OS

He is mentioning "her class", not global market share. I am pretty sure in college environment (in developed countries), Mac will be more popular than windows. Good chance these same people have iPad and Apple Pencil for note taking and their primary phones would be iPhones.

You can look at the market research for education and it is not that way. 80% is just laughable, I couldn't find any sources that even claim 40%. It is just a perception of mac users that most people use mac os, which is an understandable human bias but untrue.

In 2016, Chrome OS’s’ K-12 market share reached 51%, which marked the first time it surpassed Apple.

Apple loses more ground to Google's Chromebook in education market (usatoday.com)

Microsoft, through national contracts and Windows-based machines, remains on top for the K-12 market worldwide, with a 47% share. Chromebooks follows at 19% and Apple at 13%, Futuresource says.

Dude I was in studying abroad this past year and my class of 25 had 5 people with a windows laptop. That’s it.
Same experience with friends across the continent. Googling for statistics is different from actually being in that environment.

Obviously the 80% is not a fixed number and just an observation that macs are much more numerous than windows laptops at international universities.
My point was that having a Mac will not hamper studies in any way while having the extra battery life, less issues with Microsoft’s BS is an important factor for people not actively interested in tech.

This is a classic case of taking an N=25 (or 100 or 1000 aka minuscule compared to the universe) sample and extrapolating the results to the world. Imho, this is precisely why Statistics are used to avoid such bias.
The purpose of using statistics is to avoid assuming your limited data holds true for other universities or classes or samples.

bro, it is not an assumption nor is it statistics. it is a real life observation. like @red dragon said, in malaysia where i do my medical course, most people have either an ipad or macbook. there are people with windows laptops but they are fewer in number and i’m sure they will switch to apple when they are going to upgrade (probably. don’t quote me on this). ipads are huge in education field now. to say of which, it is replacing traditional notebooks and pen. even my sister has switched to note taking on ipad. personally i’d never prefer jotting down on ipad, but it’s just personal preference. let people do what they enjoy. peace.

Haha right soon we will have 100% Mac os penetration in education from the <20% now. This is an extreme example of your bias: The whole world loves what I do and there is no logical person who thinks differently. They will soon find that "I'm right" and switch to my way when they "see the light"

If this was not a delusion and close to reality the market share in education cannot be 20%, which is a fact. It is highly probable that you are just focusing on things that confirm your bias and ignore the rest of real world.

op’s daughter was going to an international university and it is only common sense to speak in relation to the topic that is being discussed. nobody mentioned 80% students all over the world uses a mac :)

The stats I quoted are US-specific and are specific to the education sector in the US. The international numbers look even worse.

So these numbers are for 'international universities' whatever that means, as all nations are part of inter-national.

Anyway even in the US: Mac os penetration in education is less than 20% so not sure what 'facts' are you referring to.
