Need suggestions for a water purifier

Looking to buy a water purifier for use in Bangalore. Water supply is a mix of Cauvery and borewell. Just checked the TDS today. It is around 400. Using Bisleri cans as of now. Bisleri water has a TDS of around 50. Confused between UV+UF and RO+UV+UF purifiers. Some people say RO filters strip water off all essential minerals when bringing TDS down to around 20, even the ones with a mineral charge feature. Also, yearly filter change is costly for RO filters. Do I need RO or is a UV+UF purifier enough? Please advise. Also, brand and model recommendations please.

Hindustan Uniliver Pure it. This is what we are using since 2 years and it's very good.
 
If the TDS is below 500 you actually don't "need" a RO. If you are worried about impurities, go with a UV+UF. You have good ones from Pureit, Kent, Aquaguard

My tds for bore water few months back was under 300 but now it's showing between 500-600. Do I need RO?

Also I had pure it ultima for around 6-7 years before it died, is that the normal life for water purifiers?

Check out the Livpure subscription based model. They're offering unlimited water for 525/month. Also they say the technician will adjust TDS as per your preferred water taste

500~600 is still considered in acceptable range by BIS and WHO levels. If you find the taste unpalatable then go for RO else its not mandatory. Any desi RO system with UV+UF (Aquafresh, Aquagrand, Aquawhatever) will be suffice as every part in is modular and can be serviced/replaced by us or a service person. Initial cost depending on your location would vary from 4~5k to 10k. Yearly service kit costs 1~1.2k for all filters and membrane. I have such an assembled no name model and I service it on my own and it's been running for 7+ years now

Thanks, the filter changes in pure it were kinda costly and frequent. Does the mineral filter really retain essential minerals as advertised?
I'm looking to buy the same pure it ultima with mineral filter from the service person, he said he'll take this old one for 2k.

I would say it's more of a gimmick as this is a very trace amount compared to the amounts of minerals that we take in from our food and other sources. A cheaper alternative is to add a single pink salt rock to a bottle of water to increase its tds. I tried it with my RO water. TDS went from 23 to 147 and if we are to go by the label, the Himalayan rock salt contains the trace minerals removed by RO process.

Any RO like this can be maintained by our self.

Is this the one you are referring to? Couldnt find it on Amazon. How much for yearly filter change? And how much water wastage?

I was looking at subscription services. Drinkprime and livpure are two options. Do they check water TDS and based on results install the purifier?

In the same boat. Don't know if I really need RO. Judging by what I am reading, RO filter change will cost 5k per annum at least. Subscription makes more sense at this cost. Will probably go with AO Smith if all I need is a basic UV+UF purifier.

No harm but no big benefit. Get it for sake of your peace of mind if nothing else. Get this RO https://www.amazon.in/Aquafresh-Red-Candy-Liter-Filter/dp/B092S4338H or similar one online or offline. Easy to maintain. The service kit will cost 1.2k per year. You need to change membrane only when TDS or water flow is affected. Can be done by yourself after watching youtube videos

Thanks man. Right now the subscription model also seems very appealing. Will take a call. Leaning toward a DrinkPrime subscription.

Cheers! Make sure to watch some youtube videos on whatever you are going to buy and avoid getting trapped by gimmicks!
 
If you guys are spending 500 a month on subscription, well all I can say is there a sucker born every minute.

Since I built my own RO way back in 2013, I probably spend about Rs500 every 2 years on replacing filters and may be once in 5 years on the membrane and pump, this is with cauvery water.

If you have cauvery water with TDS 400 or less you should be fine with just UF or UF,UV.

Had the same doubt. What the guy from the purifier team said was, water is not the only source where we get essential minerals. We get from food also. so it is not a concern. I tried to research it and failed to get good information with which I can make a decision and gave up

Lmao. Cost of convenience. I wish I had the time to sit down and build an ro.:laughing: Water is a mix of Cauvery and borewell though. So I expect TDS to shoot up randomly.

this I find it better and cost effective rather than branded ones. their spares comes at a premium, whereas the unbranded ones are not so costly

whatever he has given as a link should be more than enough. There is no need to build yourself. They service it at nominal costs . any aqua guy will do these unbranded ones. many times I thought of going for branded ones but later on just change whatever spare went wrong and I find it easier to maintain rather than going with a sleek looking branded ones. And you have to limit option to that particular brand's spares
