How Apple is scamming your privacy

@AINDRASIS_GUPTA if you think this is better than App Store ads, you win. Apple is evil.
There are options to turn off glance in the settings. Like I said, you need to use Android to learn how it works. Rambling about the things that can be turned off easily is just a waste of time.

And if you think that glance ads are worse than gambling ads beside unrelated apps on the App Store, then you must stop drinking that Apple cool-aid.

You must be living in a world of your own when you think personalised ads are good. Apple was showing pesky gambling ads beside unrelated apps on the App Store. The problem got so much out of hand that they had to pause gambling ads altogether: https://www.macrumors.com/2022/10/26/app-store-gambling-ads-complaints/

Just think of its impact on a teenager or a child, or worse a gambling addict who is trying to be sober.
This is funny. So, Apple is evil because of showing ads in App Store and correcting issues like showing certain type of ads. But Android OEMs are good because they stopped overloading ads. They sell huge amount of user data to agencies and this is okay? Your understanding of user data and ads is as weak as that bridge that recently collapsed in Gujarat.

See my previous post. Glance got turned on the very next day and I had to disable again. Stop blindly hating/supporting brands. I believ I told you this earlier in another thread. You have this habit of blindly hating Apple and their products.

Mom has galaxy phone. She disabled bloatware and every time there is update, all bloatware apps are reinstalled and she starts getting notifications. She stopped updating her phone for this very reason.

First and foremost, one has to understand the difference between showing ads and violating your privacy.

How do you think Facebook raked up billions though Facebook is free to use for all? Do note that what I am saying in this post is according to what it is right now. I would not go crazy and insane over rumours. Rumours also said that Apple is building a car, that Apple is building a VR headset, that Apple is bringing lot of things. Rumours are rumours and I would not get all hyped up on rumours.

1. Company A shows ads in some applications but the user data collected is not sold to any agency/government/company.
2. Company B shows ads in some applications but number of ads is less than those shown by Company A. Company B though collects lot of user data and sells this data to external agencies. Agencies then use this data to reach out to users to sell their products. Company B also sells this data to agencies that then use advanced ML techniques to map out political demographics and helps ‘xyz’ government to plan targeted ads to improve their chances of winning elections. Company B also sells this data to fintech and broker agencies who then filter out users who can bring them revenue and target them with calls/messages to sell products/services.

Just because a company does not show ads in play store does not make it a saint. As I said earlier, it is not just about what data is collected, it is about how that data is used. Selling your data to agencies/companies is absolutely gross violation of privacy. Showing random ads is not.

Android OEMs do not have the privilege to charge premium for a half eaten fruit logo. If they had, we won't be having this conversation.

A product typically has ads when its cost is low or free. I don't see it with Apple products, especially when they cost an arm and a leg. So, remind me again why are we seeing ads in iOS?

Ah, yes! An ideal way to derail any conversation is to brand the other person as a hater and job done. Are you still living in 2022? Because I feel this "corporate" hate/love thing was a massive phenomenon back in the early 2010s.

LOL. So, according to you, one can sell private data and show ads because product was sold cheap. So, a gambler can get gambling ads on a particular product because he did not pay a premium to buy a product? What kind of logic is this?

Sorry to say this. You are just spewing venom because you absolutely hate one particular company.

And you think I am Apple fanboy.

As I said, blind hatred against a company is worse than blind love for a company.

conversation? What conversation? You are just blindly throwing tantrums on Apple yet support all the shitty/dark things that Android OEMs do. There is no conversation here. You do hate one brand and you know it.

And you still do not understand the difference between ads and privacy violations.

Yesterday, I had reset wife’s k20 pro and during setup, opted not to enable glance screen. Today out of the blue, this is the Lock Screen. Just saying to those who think Mi has improved. This is downright pathetic.
That glance is very easy to get enabled accidentally. Random swipe on the lock screen turns it on.

Secondly, one should disable bloatware/adware/spyware through ADB commands. There's a one click user-friendly utility exists on github that does all the work of scanning your phone for such apps and disabling them. Another thing to know that, phones come with a lot of spywares from the facebook company even if user never installed any meta products. I can understand spywares from google and chinese companies but what facebook is doing on my phones? I think such spywares have become core part of the android now. :p

Apple also has its own set of spywares. It'd be silly to think that they don't.

Another thing, the quality of Mi ads is much much better than google ads. Google ads are downright disgusting and fraudulent. It's a difficult task for a non-tech-savvy person to install a genuine app from the play store. Google also shows pornographic ads on TE website itself. Mi ads would never do that.

I think thats a very strong statement to outright call it misleading...I think we can call apple's claims on privacy to be misleading for sure...

Which parts you thought were misleading?
The video at 1:15 calls out Apple scanning your phone's local storage to find offensive material. This alone was outright misleading. That's a violation of data protection laws across the globe.

Apple's office statement says it scans photos stored on iCloud of US users. A little bit of research goes in a long way to make a video factually correct.

Umm, Apple themselves have said that they scan local storage to find offensive material such child pornography without user's consent. It also calls directly to local police. It's a part of iOS.

It seems like you were born today. Why do you think free to play games try to sell you lootboxes and battlepasses, while a $60 game gives you everything for free?

Now, on topic, explain why a premium product from Apple, aka a $60 game, still showing ads on the App Store, News and Stock apps?

Quite ironic... Seems you yourself chose to believe what you wanted instead of doing any unbiased research

But Apple is doing something a bit different, something that feels more invasive, even though the company says it’s meant to be less so. The image scans will take place on the devices themselves, not on the servers to which you upload your photos. Apple also says it will use new tools in the Message app that scan photos sent to or from children for sexual imagery, with an option to tell the parents of children ages 12 and under if they viewed those images. Parents can opt in to those features, and all the scanning happens on the devices.

I think you guys take it a little to the extreme.
As a concurrent user of both ios and android, i like android for the added flexibility it offers- and i get why a lot of people would really love that.

But to claim that ios is worse than android when it comes to ads/privacy is akin to claiming ios is better than android when it comes to offering flexibility by cherrypicking a few instances.....
It simply isn't the case

The only strong point in that video is the Apple Tax of 30%. Rest all is speculation. I read lot of ebooks on Kindle and I am directly affected by this. I open Kindle and lets say I want to buy a new book to read. I can directly purchase from Kindle app in Android. But I cannot do that iPad/iPhone. Why? Amazon has to pay 30% of that eBook price to Apple. To fix this, Amazon does not let any iPhone/iPad user buy a book from Amazon app or Kindle app on iPhone/iPad. Yes, we cannot buy eBooks from Amazon app in iOS/iPadOS. I have to open Amazon website, purchase the book there and come back to Kindle app and download. I can buy any other product on iOS or iPadOS, not ebooks.

Somehow, Apple is absolutetly stubborn about that 30% cut. They should not apply flat 30% rate across all services. The worst thing that I hate here is that they bully companies into paying that 30%.

So, apart from this 30%, all that thing about privacy loss is just pure speculation.

Apple is very good at marketing and maintaining a facade of ethics. They were caught with their pants down in manipulating textbook prices, music pricing, etc. They were the first to compromise with the Chinese. The so-called preventing FB & other 3rd party apps from harvesting data in view of user privacy is nothing but a sugar-coated bullshit attempt to have a walled garden where they will be the only ones to get the customer data.

All the companies are after user data harvesting & monetizing.

Actually, The article acknowledges that CSAM detection happens only on photos stored in iCloud. The additional feature related to child safety is opt-in and only flags inappropriate content. This feature scans the iMessages sent or received on the device.

Take a look at this FAQ. This should clear things up.

Is this globally implemented? Why GDPR, and other Data Protection bodies are quiet on this? I Am surprised CCP did not raise a flag on this considering apple devices are a popular choice.

To clarify, the images are still scanned locally but only if they have been uploaded to iCloud. The scan happens at the time of upload. Other cloud services do the scan after the upload on the server itself. Apple believes that this is a superior approach to scanning the data on the cloud directly. Whether that is accurate or not is a separate debate though.
The second feature, CSAM detection in iCloud Photos, is designed to keep CSAM off iCloud Photos without providing information to Apple about any photos other than those that match known CSAM images. CSAM images are illegal to possess in most countries, including the United States. This feature only impacts users who have chosen to use iCloud Photos to store their photos. It does not impact users who have not chosen to use iCloud Photos. There is no impact to any other on-device data. This feature does not apply to Messages.

Also, the opt-in Message-related feature does not report to Apple or law enforcement.

Let me give a different perspective. What Apple is doing is that it is giving these tools to users to disable data collection, correct? This means that any application that heavily relies on personalised ads are taking a massive hit. Facebook alone lost 12 billion dollars this year on this one change alone. Imagine how much other companies are losing. If you have installed iOS, you will remember prompt asking whether to enabled personalised recommendations. WHen you select no, you do not get personalised recommendations in App Store, stocks app etc.

Apple wanted to hurt Facebook big time and they did that. But when they brought in this feature to block apps to track, they kind of shot themselves in the foot as well. With these features set, Apple cannot suddently go back and say we will show personalised ads but not allow others to do the same. It will be a class-action/monopoly lawsuit on them and they will lose lot more than what they will gain.

Let’s say that Apple did this because they wanted all the revenue from ads. What Apple’s restrictions did is that advertising agencies can now directly approach Apple for ads on Apple devices instead of going to Facebook/Google/Mozilla etc as these apps does not have the advantage of holding user data.

In short, as long as we have this feature in iPhone/iPad saying ‘do not track’, Apple cannot take user data and sell. If they sell user data, every company relying on ads can take Apple to court.
Ah no it isn't... Both are bad

Similarly you keep saying non targeted ads are good and targeted ads are bad... No both are bad
In a ideal world, both are bad. In current situation where you just cannot avoid ads, I would take non-targeted ads over personalized ads. Even worse side effect of all this is FB's data scandal. That showed the ugly side of collecting user data.
