Social media influencers in India must disclose promoted content in a clear and precise manner.

Promoted products/services must be actually used or experienced by the influencers.

Defaulting the guidelines would attract a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh.

In addition to this, endorsers on social media platforms should substantiate claims made by them in the promoted content.

The new guidelines have been announced to protect consumers against any misleading promotions.

Ha ha. I doubt anyone can substantiate their claims. Wonder if this goes for those hundreds of YouTube channels that claim anything under the sun. Even if we find that claims are not proven, what do we do about it? Lot of big companies here claiming big things and not delivering on it and nothing's happened to them yet.

Probably just adding on some more regulations after introducing thew new sections in the Finance Act 2022 for influencer tax. After all, it has ballooned into such a huge cash cow this "creator economy".
Hope we can see some degree of accounability the influencer has to take on, while letting the consumer have more transparency. Even better if it makes the legality surrounding grievance redressal for shilling a scam easier.

This is a step in the right direction. I am sick of brands who want to make a dedicated video on their products while not wanting to disclose that the video is sponsored. I also did that when I was new. I would like even stronger guidelines on health YouTubers. People like sh** tuber and beer biceps need to be held accountable for the scam they are running. I also hope the same guidelines will be enforced on movie stars and cricketers. I hope Virat Kohli opens an account in PNB bank this time before his photo is pasted on a board outside the bank , Amitabh Bachhan uses that washing machine which he is claiming to maintain and Sharadha Kapoor better loose weight by drinking that green tea.

Pierce Brosnan better eat that pan bahar if he wants to promote it next time.

I have only one question, is that really him, Brosnan?
It was common in the 90's. Hollywood actors were paid big money by Japanese brands for ads. These were often lame and went against the image they portrayed. Ex: Arnold wearing a bunny costume. No one knew about these until media/internet blew it up

Back on the topic. What would happen if these content creators change the location to Dubai, get paid their while pandering Indian audience?

A Dubai citizen cannot be bound by Indian laws so he can do anything he likes. I think there is too much scrutiny going on for tech youtubers while they are the one operating with least or no scam at all. What about health YouTubers whose entire channel is based on fake BS? Fit tuber should be behind bars for spreading non sense against several brands and damaging their business. Some of his videos were taken down by the order of High court because of the non sense he was preaching. A lot of these health channels are claiming cures to non curable ailments such as type one diabetes and PCOS. One video claimed that washing your feet in Karela juice helps you cure diabetes. There is already too much pseudoscience present in India and these health Youtubers & facebook pages are amplifying the problem to new heights. This is where the real problem lies.

^ interesting take. I thought this was mostly to curb scams based on betting/gambling. No doubt, it's a step in right direction.

BTW, I was referring to Indian content creators moving to neutral location and continue their BS.

90s? How about dodgy 2010s Asian ads with billionaire footballers! Huehuehuehuehue

Where there is a will, there's always a way!!
If tax Dodgers can go all the way to Singapore, Cayman Islands and other tax havens to bypass paying tax in India, why not them!!

I don't even consider tech YouTubers problematic unless they are endorsing gambling etc. Almost all tech in the market at a particular price point is more or less the same. The disgrace of Youtube community lies in health Youtubing. The pseudoscience they preach can kill someone. Imagine a diabetic patient relying on these BS remedies instead of using real medicines.
