CPU/Mobo Is my motherboard good enough?

So i have msi tomahawk max II motherboard and recently i was able to get my hands on 4070ti...is my motherboard good enough for it? The guy had 3090 too should i go for 3090 instead of 4070ti?

4070ti has only 12 gm vram and this will probably start becoming an issue now. More and more new games have started using more vram. 8gb is already too low. 10gb not sure. 12 might be enough for now but it will become a problem soon enough and we will have to reduce settings. Look at hardware unboxed videos. Also look at this interview with a unreal 5 game dev -

What some are saying is that 12 should be min for low end cards, 16 on mid cards and much more on high end cards.

I don't think buying something that expensive with low vram makes any sense, better to buy used or amd. Nvidia really dropped the ball on VRAM size in 3000 series other than 3090/ti. Somehow i thought 10 was more than enough, it still might be on High + 1440p settings. But any ray tracing advantage it had over 6800xt seems to be negated by lower VRAM for future titles. Without ray tracing probably should be ok. Only advantage left is dlss, which imo is not enough reason to compromise on vram for expensive gpus

You need a 5000 series processor. With first/second/third gen ryzens, 4070ti may be under utilised.
If you have budget for 4070ti then budget for 5700X or 5800X or even 5800X3D should not be an issue.

Yes i do have 5800x3D recently upgraded

All good man, Pcie 3.0 vs 4.0 has little impact on gaming performance. Also, 4070ti would be a better bet as well as much more efficient than 3090.
Yes I was wondering same but then theres this issue of having not enough vram for modern games though it depends on resolution (mine is 2k) if i decide to play on my tv could be 4k...is it still viable?

There's no clear answer to the VRAM question. More VRAM is always preferred, AMD launched graphics card with more VRAM since the last generation but even with lesser VRAM, Nvidia has been ruling the charts. I would reckon it would continue to do so in the next year or so. VRAM requirement should not witness a sudden surge, rather would see a gradual increase. Having said that, 12GB should be good for next year or two at least!

I hope so but i don't think so. 8 gb is already feeling the pressure with new games. Not just one, but multiple games now. Even at 1080p! Look at Hardware Unboxed videos/TechSpot and look at the dev video i linked above. 10 gb too in couple of games i think. There does seem to be a sudden jump in base vram usage even for 1080p due to devs focusing on new consoles perhaps. At some point 12gb wont be enough either. For a card costing 80k or so, this kind of limitation is not acceptable.

I probably made a mistake picking 3080 10gb over 6800xt due to RT perf. Also looked at how everything was playable at 4k, but future games will be different. And 5Y warranty. Same way 1050 2gb or 1060 3gb did not have as good a time in future titles due to low VRAM. RT itself is becoming a VRAM hog so any advantage is quickly lost. Ill mainly play older games so its not an immediate issue and hopefully some settings adjustment will be playable without too much damage to graphics ( High is usually almost as good as ultra and not worth the perf loss). But i did not pay 60k ( new ) for this kind of immediate issue. My advice to OP is to not make this mistake. Maybe it will be just enough but that is not good enough for a card priced like this. This is probably planned obsolescence from NVIDIA and maybe they were taken a bit by surprise too and new lower end ones will probably be hard to sell if they come with 8gb.
