Rupay CC - UPI Offer

I hate these MCC based offers unless it is a big merchant. Just a short time back, I made an electronic purchase on a small electronic retailer's website.

They were using PhonePe as the payment gateway and were registered under utility services MCC due to which I didn't get a cashback. There is absolutely no way of knowing this ahead of time for new websites.

totally agreed. Also, tangent but with lot of CCs, there are exclusions in rewards/cashback such as utility or govt payments or travel MCC or something like that. And you have no way to know what MCC you are swiping at.

this saved me as I was planning of purchasing from vedant or mdcomputers for availing this offer.
don't know even Amazon will be covered under this.

most big retailers are disabling CC on UPI because of the higher MDR charged to them . In fact, visa mdr is less than rupay mdr in many cases.

Not sure whether there will be an issue with those merchants. Found Razorpay to generally classify the merchant correctly. However, PhonePe offers their gateway for free presently and it seems to me they do so by onboarding every merchant as utility services as the network fees are lesser. You will definitely not get cashbacks on any merchants using PhonePe PG.
